Questioned By Fandom For The Week Of May 2nd, 2015

10 min read

anime imageAfter a bit of a lighter week last week, we got an interesting range of questions this week through our Ask.fm account. Naturally, it’s still pretty dub heavy as it seems like a lot of dub fans use it to talk and ask questions there, but we also get a few other areas of interest as well. And it’s pretty fun since it gets me to revisit or look at things that I don’t always look at closely.

Check out some of the things we were asked about this week, and hit us up with new questions here because we definitely enjoy it! Remember, it doesn’t have to be just about anime.

Paladin keeps saying that Christine Marie Cabaons is typecasted into lolis, do you agree?
Every character is loli – from the right angle. 😉

I haven’t heard too much of her work personally to say if she’s been typecast. While some voice actors have a huge range, others are a bit more narrow. I’m not saying that about her in the slightest. I don’t have the familiarity to say so. But just looking at her credits it’s something where I’m not sure I’d say she’s typecast, but she has a leaning towards playing those roles.

Do you think anime with high streaming numbers, but poor reviews, wouldn’t be justifiable for a dub in a similar vein with low streaming numbers, but good reviews since the anime wouldn’t sell as well simply because the anime is terrible (in regards to Sentai Filmworks dubbing decisions)?
Nah, they’d be totally justifiable. Bad reviews raise interest for a number of shows. People love to watch bad shows. How else does Attack on Titan have such high streaming numbers? Have you seen that pile ‘o crap…

ok, ok, seriously. The streaming numbers are just one piece of the puzzle. So are reviews. As is the cost of the show, the cost of dubbing and overall expectations. There are a lot of critically acclaimed shows that just don’t get dubs because they’ve got the critical kiss of death on them. But at the same time, the purchasing side of fans aren’t looking for those unless there’s that rare, huge crossover show.

What gets a dub and what doesn’t, with Sentai specifically, is something that I’d love to see the equation for. I want to image that it’s on a wipeboard in the office and they just plug it through.

Would it be safe to say that Aniplex USA puts more emphasis on their dubbing quality despite dubbing far less titles than Sentai Filmworks?
Apples and oranges. While both companies deal in anime, both are working on different models, backgrounds, expectations and experiences.

While there are areas where comparisons work, there are others where it doesn’t. This is one of those for me.

Do you know that according to Bryce Papenbrook himself, his voice hasn’t changed much since his middle school years? Do you think he might end up voicing more traps in the future? (not that it matters since Bryce used a more androgynous voice for GGO Kirito)  Dark Paladin X
Once you said ‎@BrycePapenbrook, my mind just went in the direction that he’s simply dreamy and I blanked out on the rest. Sorry.
Thoughts on Bieber?
I’ll be honest. Well, I’m always honest. But let me be honest here.

When the kid first hit the scene and my youngest was listening to him and all the rage about him, I didn’t pay it much mind. Every generation has its flash in the pan type that garners a lot of attention. Some go on to big things, others disappear. I can’t remember how many I’ve known like that over the years.

What changed me was seeing that first docu-movie. While it plays up the positives as you’d expect, it was also rather honest in a lot of ways I didn’t expect. And it really did show his talent. The kid HAS talent. But he, like so many, got caught up in the machine and the PR side, the wealth, the fame, nobody saying no. So he went through the wringer to where he is now – deservedly so.

Seeing his recent roast, his admission of what he’s done and his attempts to do better are things that I’m willing to believe are honest. And for the sake of himself, his fans and his talent, I hope he does follow through and become a solid, engaging and interesting adult artist over the next few years.

Do you think Sentai Filmworks is putting a lot of their dubbing resources into Parasyte & Akame Ga Kill over Black Bullet, Brynhildr, and Chaika? Do you think Sentai will try to have the Parasyte and AGK dubs be as high quality as possible so Toonami will be interested in airing these 2 in Toonami?
It’s not an either/or situation.

There are always multiple shows in production. If Black Bullet warrants a dub, it’s because they believe it will see more sales that way to justify it. If they don’t have the talent for it at the time, it’ll get held until they do. But those shows have been done and gone for a bit, so they’re likely in production. Shows like Parayste and Akame ga KILL have just recently finished their broadcast. Odds are Sentai doesn’t even have materials for it – because as the home video releases come out in Japan, they get upgrades and reworkings, so you have to wait until those are done before you can dub it.

I know people are anxious over certain titles, but there’s no unhealthy competition between individual series.

Patience is all I can suggest.

Agree or disagree: Yuuichirou Hyakuya is made to be voiced by Bryce Papenbrook in Seraph of the End Broadcast Dub.
I haven’t listened to either so I can’t say. I’m so far behind on the things I want to watch that it’s just plain ridiculous these days. I used to do something like 20+ simulcasts a week for review. But now five or six is about all I can do. Partially because I end up seeing the DVD/BD release and that just feels like duplicating efforts.
Do you think ShiroBako should get a CE?
SHIROBAKO should be a mandatory purchase for every anime fan.

Since it’s a two cour show, and one that I doubt will get dubbed, I doubt it’ll get a premium treatment of any sort. It should, but the realities just aren’t there.

What do you mean the realities aren’t there for ShiroBako?
It’s a two season show that while critically acclaimed, isn’t one that’s really a big seller. It does well in Japan, but shows like that don’t sell well here at all. Slice of life shows used to get a dub back in the day, but it’s the rare one that does now. With that many episodes to dub, it just has the odds stacked against it when factoring in all the costs.

I’d love to be pleasantly surprised by them producing one. But I’d guess that the number crunching won’t work out in its favor. There’ve been a number of talky/slice of life shows that really deserve a dub that don’t get one. This will be another.

Do you think Media Blasters hiring MB Voiceworks for dubs will bring the NY VA Talent Pool back to it’s feet?
Probably not, but I’m hopeful that they can draw some in after awhile. A lot of the focus is on younger, newer talent in that area and it’s hard to disagree with it from a cost basis. And the industry can always use more talent since there are stages where it feels like we have the same pool of actors being overused. I’m in the mind of giving it time and seeing how it develops. The best thing to do is to support it in this stage and if it improves, it pays off. If it doesn’t, it’s easy to back away.

Thoughts on increasing focus on cinema for Funimation, Viz, and Madman? Seems that a lot of titles are being released/tested this year.
It really does seem like it goes in cycles. A lot of it depends on the quality of films coming out of Japan as well. It felt like we had a real drought for awhile of things worth licensing and releasing. That’s picking up more, especially as there are more smaller cinemas out there and a greater ease in distribution partners through digital means these days. It’s complicated in its own ways as always, just different from the old ways.

It’s a plus though. I love anime on the big screen. I just hate watching it with other fans because they talk constantly like they’re in their living room.

Since the BD Box is coming close, would you like to see Sentai give Angel Beats the CE treatment?
DAMNIT YES.

NOW.

While I’m not a huge Angel Beats! advocate, I’d love to see something high end released for it so that it gets the kind of treatment it and its fans deserve. Not every show warrants a CE release, and most are just lucky to be released at all. But some like this, HTOD and others warrant revisiting.

How did Media Blasters got a lot of trouble in their hands?
They picked it up?

Not sure what the question truly is here. I mean, I get it, there’s always grief to give every company for any number of decisions, and MB has been all over the map over the years. But from what I know of them, I just see a lot of fun stuff coming up on the horizon for them.

But I’m an outlier in most fan communities. I’d rather focus on the positive rather than delve deep into the negative on a regular basis. I grew up with a lot of negativity around me and refuse to let that kind of mindset bring me down much.

Many people think the Holy Night dub was more of a licensed Fandub, do you disagree?
Disagree. Every new studio has to start somewhere. And since it was all paid work and approved up the chain, that’s not a “fandub”.

Thoughts on Crimson Star Media?
Beyond the fact they don’t exist? It’s been effectively dead for awhile now and the single license they had has been handled elsewhere.

I’m all for new players coming into the market to try and expand and deal with diverse product, but the right people have to do it. I’m a believer in redemption, but this was just destined to be a disaster.

Does it bother you how Part II of the AoT LE w/Artbox is pretty much sold out instead of still in print? Especially when it helps to have boxes to hold those loose digipaks together?
It’s how it goes with limited editions unfortunately. Things move quickly, especially for something like that. I do wish it had been planned a bit better from the start as when I got the first part, that was my biggest realization in that there was no real latching/closing ability with it. It’s a fantastic package otherwise though.
Which bothers you most as a collector: Bad packaging(*cough* Funimation), blu-ray holdbacks or 2 cour series with an MSRP of $400 for a domestic blu-ray release?
You’d have to cite the bad packaging from FUNimation. Sometimes limited materials impact what can be used. But build quality in general has been solid for quite some time, for LE’s at least.

Have there been $400 domestic Blu-ray releases? I can’t think of any. There’s been some imports sold locally, but that’s its own kettle of fish. Those aren’t domestic releases.

Holdbacks are probably the worst. Particularly since double-viewing in the period of a year isn’t what I like to do. I do like revisiting shows, but with five years or more between them to allow time for opinions to change on them either for better or worse.

If the rumors about a Gochiusa/Kiniro Mosaic crossover anime were true, would you more or less likely to watch the anime?
I’ll watch just about anything put in front of me. 🙂
What is the worst anime to you?
Anime is like pizza. There’s no bad anime.

Worst is hugely subjective. Did it not live up to expectations? Were my expectations to high? Did it not go in the route I expected to and therefore I was disappointed? Or was it just really poor animation, lackluster story and like everything else that I’ve seen before?

The worst anime for me that I can think offhand is the Dark hentai release. That one was worst in that it was just so utterly disturbing that I can never revisit it. But it was also incredibly beautifully animated and I have a strong desire to see it again.
