After a bit of a lighter week last week, we got an interesting range of questions this week through our Ask.fm account. Naturally, it’s still pretty dub heavy as it seems like a lot of dub fans use it to talk and ask questions there, but we also get a few other areas of interest as well. And it’s pretty fun since it gets me to revisit or look at things that I don’t always look at closely.
Check out some of the things we were asked about this week, and hit us up with new questions here because we definitely enjoy it! Remember, it doesn’t have to be just about anime.
I haven’t heard too much of her work personally to say if she’s been typecast. While some voice actors have a huge range, others are a bit more narrow. I’m not saying that about her in the slightest. I don’t have the familiarity to say so. But just looking at her credits it’s something where I’m not sure I’d say she’s typecast, but she has a leaning towards playing those roles.
ok, ok, seriously. The streaming numbers are just one piece of the puzzle. So are reviews. As is the cost of the show, the cost of dubbing and overall expectations. There are a lot of critically acclaimed shows that just don’t get dubs because they’ve got the critical kiss of death on them. But at the same time, the purchasing side of fans aren’t looking for those unless there’s that rare, huge crossover show.
What gets a dub and what doesn’t, with Sentai specifically, is something that I’d love to see the equation for. I want to image that it’s on a wipeboard in the office and they just plug it through.
While there are areas where comparisons work, there are others where it doesn’t. This is one of those for me.
When the kid first hit the scene and my youngest was listening to him and all the rage about him, I didn’t pay it much mind. Every generation has its flash in the pan type that garners a lot of attention. Some go on to big things, others disappear. I can’t remember how many I’ve known like that over the years.
What changed me was seeing that first docu-movie. While it plays up the positives as you’d expect, it was also rather honest in a lot of ways I didn’t expect. And it really did show his talent. The kid HAS talent. But he, like so many, got caught up in the machine and the PR side, the wealth, the fame, nobody saying no. So he went through the wringer to where he is now – deservedly so.
Seeing his recent roast, his admission of what he’s done and his attempts to do better are things that I’m willing to believe are honest. And for the sake of himself, his fans and his talent, I hope he does follow through and become a solid, engaging and interesting adult artist over the next few years.
There are always multiple shows in production. If Black Bullet warrants a dub, it’s because they believe it will see more sales that way to justify it. If they don’t have the talent for it at the time, it’ll get held until they do. But those shows have been done and gone for a bit, so they’re likely in production. Shows like Parayste and Akame ga KILL have just recently finished their broadcast. Odds are Sentai doesn’t even have materials for it – because as the home video releases come out in Japan, they get upgrades and reworkings, so you have to wait until those are done before you can dub it.
I know people are anxious over certain titles, but there’s no unhealthy competition between individual series.
Patience is all I can suggest.
Since it’s a two cour show, and one that I doubt will get dubbed, I doubt it’ll get a premium treatment of any sort. It should, but the realities just aren’t there.
I’d love to be pleasantly surprised by them producing one. But I’d guess that the number crunching won’t work out in its favor. There’ve been a number of talky/slice of life shows that really deserve a dub that don’t get one. This will be another.
It’s a plus though. I love anime on the big screen. I just hate watching it with other fans because they talk constantly like they’re in their living room.
NOW.
While I’m not a huge Angel Beats! advocate, I’d love to see something high end released for it so that it gets the kind of treatment it and its fans deserve. Not every show warrants a CE release, and most are just lucky to be released at all. But some like this, HTOD and others warrant revisiting.
Not sure what the question truly is here. I mean, I get it, there’s always grief to give every company for any number of decisions, and MB has been all over the map over the years. But from what I know of them, I just see a lot of fun stuff coming up on the horizon for them.
But I’m an outlier in most fan communities. I’d rather focus on the positive rather than delve deep into the negative on a regular basis. I grew up with a lot of negativity around me and refuse to let that kind of mindset bring me down much.
I’m all for new players coming into the market to try and expand and deal with diverse product, but the right people have to do it. I’m a believer in redemption, but this was just destined to be a disaster.
Have there been $400 domestic Blu-ray releases? I can’t think of any. There’s been some imports sold locally, but that’s its own kettle of fish. Those aren’t domestic releases.
Holdbacks are probably the worst. Particularly since double-viewing in the period of a year isn’t what I like to do. I do like revisiting shows, but with five years or more between them to allow time for opinions to change on them either for better or worse.
Worst is hugely subjective. Did it not live up to expectations? Were my expectations to high? Did it not go in the route I expected to and therefore I was disappointed? Or was it just really poor animation, lackluster story and like everything else that I’ve seen before?
The worst anime for me that I can think offhand is the Dark hentai release. That one was worst in that it was just so utterly disturbing that I can never revisit it. But it was also incredibly beautifully animated and I have a strong desire to see it again.
