‘Siege’ Spins Out Of ‘Secret Wars’ In July

2 min read

Siege HeaderMarvel Comics is working another Battleworld branded series into events this summer with Secret Wars as they’ve now announced Siege, which will debut in July. The book comes from writer Kieron Gillen and artist Felipe Andrade with cover by W. Scott Forbes and a variant to be revealed by Andrew Robinson.

“The Shield’s purpose is to stop everything that’s south of that point going north of that point,” explains Gillen in an interview with Marvel.com. “It’s because everything south of the Shield is entirely ungovernable. They want to eat you. Being deposited on the Shield is a punishment for a mixture of people who are entirely too battle-hungry or entirely too heroic.”

“Like Kieron’s iconic take on Loki, we’re looking to cause a bit of mischief with this book,” says series Editor Jake Thomas. “We’re putting all the wildest things we can think of into a canon, we’re firing that canon at a canvas, and we’re calling what hits that canvas ‘SIEGE’. And we’re giggling the whole time.

“Part of that,” continues Thomas, “is bringing in a rogues gallery of some of the more idiosyncratic comic artists we can get our hands on to do these wild, singular double-page spread battles (and we’ve already got the one-of-a-kind Felipe Andrade on the main interiors, so that should tell you something!). It’s taking a typical, fun exciting comic and rejiggering it to make it a bit unpredictable, a bit unstable. You never know what will be on the other side of a page turn.”

Plot concept: Welcome to the Shield, the last line of defense against the hordes to the south of Battleworld. Zombie armies, Ultron robots primed only for death, and the Annihilation Wave. The Shield is the only thing that keeps them out. To patrol the Shield is to know fear, for your end could come at any moment. To man the Shield is to put your trust in the men and women standing beside you at the edge of the world. And to trust your leader. Because if you patrol the Shield – you answer to Abigail Brand.

Now Brand and her team – Lady Katherine Bishop, Leah of Hel, Magik, Leonardo Da Vinci, Miss America Chaves, the Endless Summers and Grimm – must stand alone against unstoppable darkness. Because if they fail – everything is lost. The valiant last stand of the unsung heroes of Battleworld begins this July in SEIGE #1!
