As much as I liked the rise of comics taking themselves more seriously during the 80’s, I also lamented the loss of the characters and stories having fun. The advent of grimdark everywhere and an attempt to get away completely from the golden and silver age of comics style was a huge loss. I didn’t want that everywhere, but what little we got was sweet. Such continues to be the case with Sensation Comics, as this installment from Ollie Masters and Amy Mebberson gives us a taste of the fun that’s almost like a Saturday morning cartoon. I’m a fan of seeing some well designed Diana and Selina to be sure, but I also love that there are so many interpretations and styles that can be applied to them, making it a heck of a lot more enjoyable – and openly accessible to other audiences.

This issue has us sending Diana off to London to deal with a break-in at the British Museum as performed by Catwoman. Selina’s being very blunt about what she’s doing, essentially begging to be captured, and Diana does just that. Though it is a little bit of a struggle for her since she was up late the night before fighting Cheetah and hasn’t had her coffee yet. There’s not much of a fight between the two and Diana ends up holding onto her for awhile until the special powers unit can get there to help, which makes for some really cute moments as the two women get coffee while waiting to send Selina packing. Of course, Selina has a plan within a plan and we see that unfold as the truth of what she’s after comes out, but it’s all done with a perfect lightness that makes it easy to just savor and enjoy as it unfolds.

In Summary:
The first half of the run so far with Sensation Comics admittedly had me not sure I would keep up on it long if it was just doing standard fare standalone stories with a touch of fun at best. But as we’ve moved into the last few issues, it’s really made me enjoy it a whole lot more. I’ve read so many books over the years and enjoy a whole range of styles, but this is the one that I think I’ve missed the most when you get down to it. It’s just fun, and that’s been sadly missing for too long. Masters does a solid job of giving us a good take on Diana “the morning after” a battle while we see Selina being all wink-wink about her bigger plan going into motion. It’s made a lot more fun by Mebberson’s really great style here that doesn’t try to mimic anyone else but rather sets its own tone, especially since she did the coloring as well to bring it to life like she want to. It’s a very good and enjoyable read.

  1. Amy’s take on all the Disney Princesses living under the same roof is a delight as well in her ‘Pocket Princesses’ collection.
