Strange Plus Season 2 Episode 9
Phantom thief’s are so predictable.

What They Say:
Kou comes to a certain city, in search of his older brother Takumi, who ran away from home and disappeared. Thinking it’d be rather difficult to find his older brother, Kou decides not to go back until he finds him… but he ends up finding him immediately. However, when Kou is reunited with Takumi, he had become the head of the Mikuni Detective Agency. Takumi appears to have no intentions to go back home. Kou then decides that if his older brother isn’t going to come home, he’s going to stay at the Mikuni Detective Agency.

With the way the show plays with a lot of anime tropes and well known properties, there is some fun with it. This one plays up the whole phantom thief angle as the group is invited to a party to deal with a thief named Rusty that’s going to do some thieving at Kanamiya’s place, likely with the massive diamond he wears on his hand among other wealthy people there. Naturally, things go bad quickly – and that’s not including Takumi in his butt costume – as Rusty reveals herself and makes her move to steal the diamond. Suffice to say, it’s mass chaos as events unfold which is pretty much what you’d expect from a show like this. It plays well to the phantom thief angle while also being cute in its own way.

In Summary:
Strange+ goes for a more conventional episode here and in a way that’s good and bad. The good is that as a story in this short a time frame, it actually makes sense and tells a story in its three main parts. The downside is that it’s a bit more predictable and not quite as zany as it can get. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, largely because the show has a very hard time finding that middle ground to make both work at the same time. I like the parody in general and some of what they do with it, which made me smile more than a couple of times, but it also just felt too straightforward as well.
