Magica Wars Episode 21
Magica Wars Episode 21
It’s time to head to good old Kyoto!

What They Say:
In every decade or hundreds of years, the dragon moves its body as if it tosses about unconsciously. The movement becomes the distortion and causes impurity. This “impurity” lavishes an evil on people. And now, there is a huge indication of a distortion. Gods foresaw the greatest harm would happen to Japan, divide own power and give it off as a messenger of God (“Shinshi”) in Japan to gather mediums, or “Magica” who can expel the “impurity”. With the magical weapon the power of Gods, “Magica” will fight to stop evils in Japan.”

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Kicking off a new arc and a new character, Magica Wars gives us a touch of action from the start as we meet Konoe Mebuki of the Kyoto Metropolitan Area, the latest prefecture for the show. The show shifts us elsewhere after the credits though as we meet Mizuki, the resident monster specialist doing her best to deal with the creatures that are causing small disruptions around the city. Sadly, she’s not all that good at it, but she tries with all her might. She has a lot to contend with since they can’t let the ley line be broken as that would be disastrous, but she doesn’t know that Konoe is out there fighting as well with her fox-like familiar helping out as her guardian. Their paths only lightly cross at the end here as both are moving towards the same investigation, but it works well.

In Summary:
With the show opting to go for a more traditional starting episode here where it’s light on action and more focused on character, Magica Wars simply works better. We don’t get much with Konoe, but she’s already a little tantalizing. Part of that comes from knowing more about Azuki first and that the two will pair up in some form and Azuki is easy to like and connect with. Taking us to Kyoto is also a treat since we get some good locales to work with and once again some pretty appealing animation and designs as we move into the 7th arc of the series.
