The pilot for the NBC show Constantine has just added its lead actor as Matt Ryan will be taking on the titular role. Ryan comes from Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior and looks like he may be able to bring some of the British aspect of the character to the show as he’s Welsh himself.

The character is described as: “John Constantine is described as a working-lass Londoner with rakish good looks, scruffy blond hair, deadpan humor, and signature trench coat, who has been studying the dark arts since he was a teenager. When the daughter of a late friend is targeted by demons, Constantine steps in to save her. ”

Neil Marshall has snagged the director’s job previously for Warner Bros. TV where he’ll help to set the tone for the series that will be utilized going forward if it gets picked up for a series. Marshall has some solid credits to his name, having worked on Black Sails and doing some upcoming Game of Thrones work as well in addition to being known for the feature film The Descent. He’ll be working off of the script by Daniel Cerone and David S. Goyer.

Originally created back in 1985 as a character in Swamp Thing, he’s been involved in the dark underbelly of the DC Comics world through the Vertigo imprint before being folded back into the mainstream side during the New 52 run as a part of Justice League Dark. And the character is also supposedly tapped to be in the Justice League Dark film that Guillermo del Toro wants to get off the ground at Warner Bros.

Plot concept: Based on the characters in DC Comics’ John Constantine stories, the project centers on John Constantine (Ryan), an enigmatic and irreverent con man-turned-reluctant supernatural detective who is thrust into the role of defending us against dark forces from beyond.
