Sometimes the networks are so confident in things that they don’t even wait for the first show’s numbers to come in. With The Walking Dead being a powerhouse in the ratings for AMC and a companion series being put together for next year, they’ve formally announced that the show has been renewed for a sixth season ahead of this coming Sunday’s debut of the fifth season. The sixth season is going to bring back Scott Gimple to be the showrunner once again as well as an executive producer along with the team that’s largely been there from the start with Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, Greg Nicotero and Tom Luse.

The series continues to have really impressive ratings with the season four finale this past march bringing in just under 16 million viewers, a bump up of nearly 3.5 million viewers over the season three finale in the “all important 18-49 bracket.
