While there had been a tipoff earlier in the day that it was going forward, and it’s really not a surprise, announcing a sequel the week before the debut of the first film is a good move. With Guardians of the Galaxy hitting this coming week, the news of a sequel already being greenlit with a date and director James Gunn back for it, it definitely helps to secure it as a must-see film for many, especially on top of all the good reviews. While we’re expecting all of the cast back, plus some new faces as well, we’ll wait for the official confirmations. Until then, here’s what things are looking like for the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe plans:

  1. Guardians Of The Galaxy on 8/1/14
  2. Avengers: Age Of Ultron on 5/1/15
  3. Ant-Man on 7/17/2015
  4. Captain America 3 on 5/6/2016
  5. Marvel Untitled on 7/8/16
  6. Marvel Untitled on 5/5/17
  7. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 on  7/28/17
  8. Marvel Untitled on 11/3/17

  10. Marvel Untitled on 7/6/18
  11. Marvel Untitled on 11/2/18
  12. Marvel Untitled on 5/3/19

The first film is set for release on August 1st, 2014 as directed by James Gunn, the feature brings together Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper, Dave Batista, Vin Diesel, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Benicio del Toro, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close and Gregg Henry

Plot concept: An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits — Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand — with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.
