What trends on Twitter doesn’t always translate into the actual ratings, but some of that comes from the fact that a lot of people watching are doing so outside of traditional means, especially with so many shows streaming shortly after broadcast. Ratings collector Nielsen has put together what the top ten most talked about TV shows are on Twitter from the September 1st, 2013 to May 25th, 2014 dates which is when the traditional seasons run and there’s some definitely surprises in that. The social index is growing in importance for showrunners and networks as examples to advertisers that there is something to be had in there and quantifying it is an important part of monetizing it. But it also shows where the buzz can come from that will in turn generate more discussion for your show and in turn hopefully draw more people in.
- Breaking Bad
- The Walking Dead
- Pretty Little Liars
- The Bachelor
- Game of Thrones
- Teen Wolf
- American Horror Story: Coven
- Scandal
- The Voice
- Dancing With the Stars
The list is expected in a lot of ways, especially titles like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. The surprises are with Pretty Little Liars – until you see how the series works its social aspects – and Teen Wolf, which MTV works really well with the mixture of music, getting people to check out the song sites and playing up the hashtags to generate more discussion. Never mind the fact that (we think) it’s an awesome show as well.
