Star Wars Thursday: Lego Leia at ALA Edition

2 min read

Star Wars ALA 1Welcome back to Star Wars Thursday, a celebration of the wonderful and often wacky world of a galaxy far, far away.

There comes a time in every action packed life when you need a great book. Maybe it’s to get more information for a diplomatic mission; or to discover great new recipes to help celebrate finding your long lost brother. Maybe it’s just for reading on a quiet night huddled for warmth on Hoth. Regardless of why she needs new reading material, Lego Leia knows that the best place to find it is at a book convention. Luckily, she was able to tag along as my son and I explored the exhibit hall at the recent ALA Midwinter convention.

While a train ride into Philly isn’t nearly as exhausting as space travel or leading the Rebels into battle, Leia decided she could use a little caffeine to gear up for the day. Ecogrounds had just the treat she was looking for.

A diplomat’s job is never done. The crayons have numerous complaints to share in The Day the Crayons Quit, by Drew Daywalt, and they are hoping that Lego Leia can help. I’m guessing this will be an easy job for such a skilled ambassador.

Lego Leia is also accustomed to handling furry companions. Bad Kitty may not be able to rip people’s arms off when she loses, but she still is capable of causing serious problems for those around her. She’s also an excellent teacher, though, and Bad Kitty Drawn to Trouble by Nick Bruel helped give Leia some ideas for how to write a book about her own adventures.

After a busy morning of handling picture book problems, Lego Leia was ready to hit a local lunch hot spot. We trucked across the icy road and ducked into Reading Terminal Market in search of sustenance. The 12th Street Cantina had delicious burritos and authentic Mexican sodas. Yum!

By the end of the day, Lego Leia had a nice little assortment of books for the months ahead. Most of these aren’t yet available in stores, but Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass is out and won the 2014 Pura Belpré award!

We had to go back the next day to meet Tom Angleberger. One look at the cover of his next book (on the right) will make it clear why Leia wouldn’t take “no” for an answer.

Here you have it – the photo Lego Leia will treasure for years to come. Princess Labelmaker, Tom Angleberger with a classic Leia look, and Lego Leia herself.

It was a long weekend, but Lego Leia assures me that all the walking was worth it. Until next week – grab a book and may the Force be with you!
