We’re moving into April 2024 and it’s definitely not a place where a lot of people thought we’d be. With the fall TV season being pushed back due to the strikes, a lot of films delayed and being adjusted, and of course just the nature of seasonal broadcasts, it’s been pretty light lately. We’ve had a number of things we’ve checked out but a lot of what I’ve been doing is rewatching older stuff or spending time on holiday programming. Which isn’t actually a lot to talk about when you get down to it. So, to kick off this latest week, we want to highlight some of the things we’re looking forward to this month.
First up this week we’ve got something new on the anime feature film side with Kestrel attending the Los Angeles premiere of SPY x FAMILY CODE: White. “Overall, SPY x FAMILY CODE: White sits comfortably between the old pattern of Jump movies being unengaging isolated filler and this brave new world of films standing on a comparable level to the series proper. It’s a fun ride, and that’s what you want from a SPY x FAMILY movie more than any other Jump series in recent memory. If nothing else, the combination of action set pieces, large-scale scenery, and various elements that play well in large groups, it’s more than worth seeing in a theater. I’ll be seeing it again for its wide release next week on April 19 (April 18 in most theaters).”

This week saw the debut of the Fallout live-action TV series on Prime Video and once again I think they made a mistake in how they rolled this out. All eight episodes are available at once and that meant that before I even got to watch a single frame of it you had thinkpieces and detailed headlines about how the series ends. It really killed a lot of my enthusiasm but also put me into a place where I’m going to slow-walk actually watching it so that I forget about the headlines and spoilers that I was exposed to. I’ve never played the games so this is a pretty fresh approach for me and with it taking place within the world and not adapting a specific game or storyline there’s a lot to like there. The show has an interesting future that we see play out from a couple of different directions with main characters that have vastly different lives in the late 2200s here and I absolutely love the attention to detail, the absurdity in the violence, and the dialogue that we get. The cast is pretty much fantastic across the board and I’m excited to see where it goes – once I forget a bit more about it.
After launching with two episodes, we’re now digging into the fifth episode of X-Men ’97. X-Men 97 has a lot of ground to cover here and it throws a lot at us and a lot of characters. And if you never watched the original series it’s easy to be confused at times. I’m still drawing on extensive comics knowledge to manage most of it but there are characters I’m sure of. The main cast continues to shine, however, and seeing the relationship dynamics play out is every bit as dramatic as the Sentinal action and how big and crazy it gets. There’s a lot of stuff here that works exceptionally well and it goes as big as it should for a property like this and threats like this. The scale is off the charts in all the right ways.

This past week also saw the twelfth episode of the final season of Star Wars: The Bad Batch. While it’s a combination of skill and luck that lets the team succeed in this mission, it’s so much fun to watch. I hate canyon/mountain edge path things since they’re just so fraught but also because I’ve been on them and it’s frightening. It’s a lot of fun here in how it manages to move from the quiet moments of the start to doing an extraction as they do here to get the intelligence they need. It’s a little needlessly last-minute with some of what it does that reminds you of Tech’s exit from the show but that’s part of the point in keeping you on edge for as much of it as you can. I enjoyed the heck out of this episode and am curious to see what will happen to Rampart at this point.
