‘Amazing Spider-Man’ Gets Green Light For Third & Fourth Films

amazing spidermanSony is intent on keeping its franchise going for Amazing Spider-man, which is currently filming the second installment right now for a 2014 release. The studio has announced dates for two more installments as well with the third one due out on June 10th, 2016 and the fourth on May 4th, 2018. This doesn’t really lock in anyone on the production side beyond the lead with Andrew Garfield as he’s likely signed on at least a three picture deal if not a four picture deal, which could give us a potentially interesting progression for the character if they do manage to grow with his own appearance and maturity as it goes on for the next five years.

The 2012 release of Amazing Spider-Man attempted to restart things after the way the finale of the Sam Raimi trilogy went across with a dud, largely from studio interference of wanting more villains, and it landed with a $750 million worldwide take in theatrical box office receipts. The 2007 installment of the trilogy brought in $890 million worldwide and the drop was largely expected both from the way it was such a fresh reboot overall and that the third installment of the original trilogy left a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths, never mind all the competition around this particular release.

CULVER CITY, Calif., June 17, 2013 – With Sony Pictures Entertainment now in production in New York on The Amazing Spider-Man™ 2, slated for release on May 2, 2014, the studio is planting its flag on two future release dates for one of the most successful franchises in studio history, it was announced today by Jeff Blake, Chairman, Worldwide Marketing and Distribution for Sony Pictures. The next two films in the story of Peter Parker will be released on June 10, 2016, and on May 4, 2018, respectively.

Commenting on the announcement, Blake said, “Spider-Man is our most important, most successful, and most beloved franchise, so we’re thrilled that we are in a position to lock in these prime release dates over the next five years.”

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci & Jeff Pinkner, with a previous draft by James Vanderbilt, and based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are the producers. The executive producers are E. Bennett Walsh, Stan Lee, Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Orci.

The Amazing Spider-Man took in over $750 million at the worldwide box office last year.
