‘Black Widow’ Film Rescheduled

2 min read
A new date is set.

It’s been interesting to watch things move quickly in the theatrical market as Regal theaters and associated chains under Cinemark began to come to life now that they see both firm dates for being able to open in a lot of states as well as the vaccination push. While they’ve got details on their respective sites about how they’re making things safe, one thing they were pushing with their April 2nd, 2021 opening across a lot of the country was that May 7th, 2021 would feature the debut of Black Widow, which has been delayed from its February 2020 release date due to the pandemic.

With Warner Bros. and the chain coming to some solid agreements, here comes Disney stomping into the situation where they’ve now moved the film to a July 9th, 2021 release date (presumably to ensure more people would go as more people will be vaccinated by then) and to be a summer event. But they also made this a Disney+ Premier Access title that will be available the same day for presumably $30 like previous ones. Which is going to frustrate an already beleaguered theater chain hoping to be the only place to see the film.

With a lot of European markets still closed and Latin America as well, it also makes sense to push back a couple of months in hopes of them being better situated by then.

The film is set to star Scarlet Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, O-T Fagbenle, Ray Winstone, and Rachel Weisz.

We learned previously that Cate Shortland has signed on for the project after working on the Nazi drama film Lore previously. The Australian director doesn’t have a huge slate of films in her list but it factors into how Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige have worked previously when exploring projects like this, often to great success.

Plot Concept: Following the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016), Natasha Romanoff is on the run from the government following her disobedience to the Sokovia Accords and for aiding Steve Rogers finds herself on her own and is forced to deal with “some of the red in her ledger”.
