It’s almost embarrassing but I really only watched one movie this week.

While it got a premiere back in March 2018, Fast Color didn’t hit its limited theatrical run until April 2019 and then came out this month on digital. I hadn’t seen any trailers for it but had good word of mouth from trusted people and the limited concept they would tell me was intriguing. A future where the world was drying up and dying, an isolated family with generations of black women with powers. Some conceptual ideas that had you wondering, why isn’t this being talked about more and supported?

The film comes from director Julia Hart as her second film, which had me interested. With Gugu Mbatha-Raw as the lead, I was even more interested as she’s done a lot of Brit TV that I’ve liked and several movies along with the acclaimed San Junipero episode of Black Mirror. The film deals with three current living generations of women from a family with distinctive powers but it kills me as having her as the middle of it never felt like it. It’s probably just me but she looks like she’s barely in her early twenties, never mind actually being thirty-six, and I could see her playing a teenager way too easily. The film works a slow path of revealing itself but it does it expertly, drawing you in and making you want to know more of the world while being content with what you get. It definitely made an impression and I’m excited to see it again soon and to try and share it out there some.

Check out Darius’ review of the film from earlier this year.
