Disney Exploring Marvel Film Character TV Limited Run Series

2 min read

It looks like the embarrassment of riches that is being a fan of a lot of things these days is going to continue for the Marvel Cinematic Universe side of things. With the upcoming Disney streaming service, which is consolidating and bringing in a lot of things it’s sublicensed elsewhere over the years, planning for a variety of projects including the live-action Star Wars series, the final run of Clone Wars, and more projects like the High School Musical TV series, the Marvel side has been quiet beyond talking about the films being made available there.

That looks to be changing as a new piece from Variety is reporting that the studio is looking to put together a number of limited run series on it featuring the non-main characters from the film side. With fan interest in a lot of these characters but the likelihood that they wouldn’t be able to carry a full feature film with the larger budget that Marvel Studios would want to put behind it, the intent is to bring some of them to the smaller screen. The names mentioned in the piece showcase Loki and Scarlet Witch as ideal ones to work with – which could expand not just their characters but the universe itself with other lesser known characters and flesh out the in-between stories from the films – it would also utilize the actors from the films, with Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen also mentioned specifically.

Disney is working with the idea of you have to spend money to make money and they want their service with these properties to be the go-to place for them. They’re not viewing theatrical competition as the main threat these days but rather Netflix and Amazon and would rather capitalize on their properties themselves rather than through others.

The piece indicates that while nothing is firmly in place in terms of writers/directors for these projects, it won’t impact the ongoing works with what Marvel TV has established elsewhere with the Netlflix series, ABC projects, or what’s on Freeform.
