‘Kong: Skull Island’ Conquers Box Office

skull-island-posterIt’s a battle that figures in well in a very old school comic book kind of way with the wild Logan going up against the big beast that is Kong: Skull IslandLogan did great numbers in its opening weekend and built on it during the week while adding another $38 million this weekend, bringing its domestic total so far to $152 million, a very good number. But it simply could not compete against the power of a new film out this weekend with Kong: Skull Island. That bad boy brough in $61 million for Warner Bros. and it’s doing well overseas where it did $81 million across 65 markets.

Recent films are doing decently overall as Get Out continues to have a great hold and word of mouth is going strong with it drawing in another $21 million. The Shack is finding audiences with another $10 million added while LEGO Batman ekes out a few more bucks with a $8 million weekend to bring it to just under $160 million.

I also love to continue talking about how well Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is doing as it tanked in the US but is doing great overseas on its $40 million budget. While it’s obviously not charting here at all, it’s now done over $300 million worldwide thanks to some very receptive Asian markets.

Next weekend has a film that’s tracking in ticket presales better than most anything else lately with Beauty and the Beast and that’s going to have some fun counterprogramming with The Belko Experiment, which is a kind of Battle Royale set in an office environment.
