For everything…. there is a season…
There’s nothing like heading into a time of quiet reflection and penance to make humans party like there’s no tomorrow. Yesterday was Ash Wednesday, the official start of the Lent season for many Christian groups. It’s a season to give up treats, sweets, or other luxuries to ready their hearts to celebrate Easter. So, of course, Tuesday was a day of feasting and general craziness.
Everything is the season of Star Wars, so I knew there would be plenty of fannish Fat Tuesday connections. I have always known about Mardi Gras and “living it up” before Lent, but I didn’t realize until this week that pancakes are also a Fat Tuesday tradition.
The official Star Wars Facebook page kicked it all off by sharing a video of a master pancake creator. I wonder if this pancake chef is using the Force, because I can’t even get a simple round pancake to flip properly.
Impressive…. most impressive. Another pancake artist dazzles us with the Dark Side. The best part of this video is the little girl starting off with her Darth Maul pancake request. So evil for one so adorable…

If you aren’t as artistically gifted, and lack training with the Force, you may want a set of pancake molds to help you along. I have this set, and I still don’t get lovely designs from it. Pancakes are tasty, but the real action is Mardi Gras. This was my favorite Star Wars themed item from year’s past. The Star Wars Collectors Archive had this image of a (probably) unlicensed Yoda Mardi Gras poster from 1981. Can’t you just picture Yoda living it up?

Still not rowdy enough for you? Join in the “Krewe of Chewbaccus” for their Mardi Gras festivities. Their site declares that “The Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus is a Mardi Gras parade organization for the most revelrous Star Wars Freaks, Trekkies, Whovians, Mega-Geeks, Gamers, Cosplayers, Circuit Benders, Cryptozooligists, UFO Conspiracy Theorists, Mad Scientists, and all the rest of Super Nerdom.”
Now that sounds like it’s as much fun as Mos Eisley!
