We’re moving through June, and there are a number of shows close to wrapping up, but always new ones around the corner. We’ve had a number of things we’ve checked out but a lot of what I’ve been doing is rewatching older stuff. There’s a good mix of things as we gear up to get back into our Nordic Noir and some Brit crime but as we barely watch any primetime broadcast stuff, it’s pretty much a feast or famine kind of situation for a lot of things.
With a lot of ongoings wrapped up, and the big investment of Andor, June has a lot to offer that I’m waiting on. Stick is on my radar along with Resident Alien returning. Syfy also has Revival to check out, and Netflix has the eighth season of Somebody Feed Phil. Add in projects like Ironheart, The Bear, Smoke, and Nautilus, and there is a lot to check out. And July has some big stuff with Sandman, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and Foundation for me – never mind all the anime!
I’d taken a few weeks off from Brit crime and dramas to soak up some other stuff and stepping back into it with the 2022 season of The Responder was definitely hard. It’s got a solid cast all around led by Martin Freeman as a cop struggling with a lot of things in his life coming at him in all directions. It’s fairly straightforward in some ways, but I like that it takes place over the course of five nights, where he’s assigned a probationary officer after her partner ends up hospitalized for an encounter. Freeman’s guy has a bit of a grizzled and frazzled feeling about him and he’s caught up in things that are escalating because he’s trying to do the right thing but also has a sense of trying to make something good for himself at the same time. There are no “good” characters in this overall, but a lot of grim parts of reality and bad decisions cascading. It’s got a second season that landed in 2024 as well with both seasons clocking in at six episodes each.
For me, I’ve been enjoying some downtime after the weekly binges and writing for Star Wars: Andor. That’s sent me back to rewatching something a bit less intense with the second season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. I’ve talked about it a bit on Bluesky while watching it in the background and this week had me working through the third season and doing a few episodes of the fourth season. This is when the show started working better in terms of both writing and acting as there was a better comfort in all of it and less of the utopian angle being pushed so far. It’s there as it should be, but it’s met with a bit more nuance compared to the first couple of seasons. It does take a bit for Beverly Crusher to find her place here, and we get the complications of Wesley and all, but it works even as they look for a way to move him on more. There’s a greater exploration of the Klingon side as well as delving a bit more into Romulans as well, especially as the fourth season gets underway. I’m more entertained here than I was in the first couple of seasons, so it’s a good step up. Plus, some good Guinan material and even some decent Q material. The Borg side already kind of bores me a bit because it’s fairly simplistic and I do think it became a bit of an albatross on the show in later seasons.
