2 min read

The manga-to-live-action pipeline continues to be interesting in what titles get brought into play and a new one was revealed as in the works in April 2024 with Natsume Arata no Kekkon. The theatrical film is set for a September 6th, 2024 debut in Japan from director Yukihiko Tsutsumi. The main cast has Yuuya Yagira as Arata while Yuina Kuroshima will play Shinju Shinagawa. We also previously learned that Jiro Sato has been revealed to play Shingo Fujita from the original manga. Sato has a solid slate of credits and voice-over pieces but also played some smaller roles in the Gintama live-action works.

The latest update on the property is more focused on the manga as it’s been revealed that the thriller has now crossed the 2.7 million mark for copies in circulation both print and digital for its twelve-volume run so far. While there is no overseas English release, it does have a French and German pair of releases.

The film recently added Yūta Hiraoka and Sawako Majima to the film’s cast.

The manga, which translates as Arata Natsume’s Marriage, comes from creator Taro Nogizaka which began in 2019 and wrapped up in January 2024 with twelve volumes after being serialized in Big Comic Superior. It has not been released in English.

Big Comic Superior is a semimonthly seinen manga magazine published since July 1, 1987, by Shogakukan in Japan. Its target audience is somewhere between the audience for Big Comic Original and Big Comic Spirits.

Plot Concept: Arata is a former delinquent who works at a children’s welfare center. After consulting with the bereaved family members of one of the victims of the serial killer Shinju Shinagawa, Arata visits Shinju in prison. In order to try to get to the truth of the incident, he proposes marriage to her. Shinju, who is on death row, then starts to toy with Arata.
