Originally serialized in Comic Bavel from the June 2024 installment, After Abrupt is a twenty-four-page story from creator Cucchiore, who just a few other chapters on the service. This marked my latest experience with this particular creator as I was going and doing a little random sampling and wanted to try something different than the round of creators that I follow at this point. Cucchiore definitely has a lot of potential as there’s a solid enough setup for the story here, some good action in the main part itself, but also some surprising tenderness that has me curious to check out some of their other works. Part of it is that you want them to be able to tell a fuller story to see what they’re capable of but their work definitely has me wanting to check out more of their material if the tags are right.
The story for this one is a touch convoluted in how it plays out since it’s done in mild flashback at first but it works well enough. We’re introduced to Shou and Yuuna, a pair of twenty-somethings in college who get along very well. Yuuna has been intent on confessing her interest in him for some time and when she came over to console him a bit about a test that went poorly, she brought some liquid courage as well to help. The two had a fun and busy evening with the rousing and drinking, but she also never drank before so she definitely went over the top in undressing and basically getting all on him and getting him inside her. It’s something she wakes up to with a sense of regret in that they were both out of it and she fears that they’ll never have a relationship because of it.
Shou, upon waking up in the same bed, is incredibly apologetic and realizes that he was drunker than he realized but this just comforts her because she realizes he has feelings for her as well. The two have a kind of amusing confession post-coitus here and are surprisingly open about things in a pretty good way that makes them very likable. The dialogue is solid and it leads to them having a fresh encounter with each other in this new light and it’s pretty adorable. It’s vanilla to be sure but they’re already so in tune with each other and a lot of the tension has drifted away so that they have a pretty hot and intense time together which is thoroughly engaging with the artwork. It’s a good mix of movements, layouts, and the initial embarrassment that we get from Yuuna over being seen like this that climax well and sets a new stage for the pair.
In Summary
Though I disliked some of the setup structure of the chapter, the story itself overall is a good one and I really liked that it avoided any kind of big theatrics in how they wake up to their situation. They handled it fairly maturely and then realized their new reality and just embraced it and had fun with it. Cucchiore’s artwork is a lot of fun here with some nice layouts and good character designs while providing for some perspectives to work with as the two deal with things. I do wish it was a bit more linear rather than the waking up in a haze format but it works for this overall. I just wanted more time with the night before in showing the fun the two have in normal circumstances, but that’s what a follow-up is hopefully for!
