Max ‘Green Lantern’ Project Shifts To HBO With Series Order

2 min read
First casting news!

We learned back in October 2019 with the push for the HBO Max streaming service that a Green Lantern project was in the works along with Strange Adventures based on the DC Comics properties. We’ve had a lot of back-and-forth movement with it over the years including a good bit of casting being made for it before all sorts of pauses went into effect with ownership changes and a new approach to handling the DC properties.

The Green Lantern project was then put back into redevelopment but has now gotten a significant update as it moves from the Max service to HBO proper where it’ll get a linear release and not just exclusive to streaming. The project is an eight-part series where Chris Mundy will serve as the showrunner with scripts co-written by Tom King and Damon Lindelof.

No cast information has been revealed.

Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO and Max Content, said: “We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof as they partner with Tom for this fresh take on DC’s Green Lantern. As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live action series will mark an exciting new era.”

James Gunn and Peter Safran, Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs of DC Studios, added: “We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with Superman.”

Property Concept: The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.
