We’re moving through May 2024 and it’s definitely not a place where a lot of people thought we’d be. With the spring TV season wrapping up with shortened orders and other streaming shows pushed back due to the strikes, a lot of films delayed and being adjusted, and of course just the nature of seasonal broadcasts, it’s been pretty light lately. We’ve had a number of things we’ve checked out but a lot of what I’ve been doing is rewatching older stuff. So, to kick off this latest week, we want to highlight some of the things we’re looking forward to this month.
First up, we’ve got a look at the 4K UHD release of The Marvels. After seeing this just a few months ago, I was able to get the 4K release at a good price and ended up sitting down to watch it pretty quickly. I hadn’t forgotten anything but I was curious to see if my opinion would change much once past the initial viewing. I completely get a segment of the hate the film gets because it has structural issues that feel more like corporate-mandated problems than directorial problems and it’s still apparent here, but feels less problematic in this second viewing. That feeling is there where it’s like it was written around trying to deal with that and still tell the story it wanted to tell. It could have been done without a lot of the flashback stuff and just been implied or a line or two and then moved forward.
Either a viewer will know what’s happening from the past or they won’t know and will have to make a choice to go watch the other part eventually or not. The history doesn’t have to be front and center each time and it can just exist without being shown. That said, there are some delightful moments of it and how it ends up feeding into an absolutely wonderful post-credits scene with Monica that I knew about but didn’t really fathom until I saw it the first time. I had a lot of fun with this movie, the performances, and the overall design of it. There are things that aren’t right or good but the good stuff outweighs it in the long run and I’m definitely in the camp where when this is on in the background in the months to come, I’ll only find myself enjoying it more..

Kestrel got to hit the theaters recently to take a look at the HAIKYU!! The Dumpster Battle feature film. The film brings the beloved franchise to the big screen for the long-awaited showdown between friendly rivals Karasuno and Nekoma. There’s a great deal of weight behind this clash, one that perhaps could have benefited from more than an hour and a half of content, but it still delivers exceptional animation and thrilling tension as it pairs gameplay with the emotional stakes behind it. Kenma makes for an interesting protagonist in a different way than we’re used to, and the condensed runtime at least means his character arc is very clearly laid out, culminating in its satisfying climax with solid execution all around. Tickets are available now for HAIKYU!! The Dumpster Battle in theaters and IMAX starting May 31. Thanks to Crunchyroll for this invitation.
The recent home video release of Dune: Part 2 meant I finally got a chance to sit down and watch this as I wanted with a full 4K UHD release. I’ve been reading these books since the early 1980s and are among a few that I’ll re-read every few years. While the film certainly does work a particular adaptation of the source material since it can cover only so many of the subplots and aspects of it, it distills it down to the author’s core message in such a great way – but one that a lot of people still miss, hence hitting them over the head with the Dune Messiah book. Anyway, this film just delivered everything I expected from Villeneuve in adapting it after the first one and while one can make certain quibbles and the like in some parts of it, it’s a fascinating and thoroughly engaging work that kept my family and I focused for the whole running time at home. It’s the kind of science fiction that I like as a balance to things like Star Wars and the more space opera style works out there. The books were what I needed in my youth after becoming a Star Wars fan in showing much how much more this genre can do – and to re-evaluate that property itself as well. This film delivers in spades and I’m excited to see what comes next – even if the cowards will never adapt the best book, God Emperor of Dune.
