Originally appearing in the February 2024 installment of Comic Kaairakuten, this chapter comes from the Hiramaru Akira clocks in at twenty pages. They’ve got just three other works on the service over the past year or so and that makes them an easy creator to check out if you like one of their stories. While looking for something new to check out, the main visual for it was interesting and sometimes that’s all you need – plus a quick check of the tags. The visual appeal was a lot of the draw since it felt like it had an interesting vibe to it but sometimes just something like a nicely illustrated coat in a visual can make you want to see more since it shows a sense of style and paying attention to things. Anyone can draw a school uniform and get creative with that, but give me some real-world clothes and you’ve got my interest.
The premise for this story is certainly a familiar one and something that can be dealt with in the story. Taking place in the corporate world, we’re introduced to Reika, a young woman who works hard and handles a lot of things at work as a manager-level employee of some sort. She’s got a lot of pressure on her but handles it because she puts in the hours and makes sure it all gets done. Ryou works in the same place and sees her going through this and the two of them at some point come together with some kind of relationship. It’s not clear how long or how clearly defined it is but they have a life outside of the office that we’re able to see some of it because, as you’d expect, after being the one in charge during the day, Reika is looking to just be told what to do at night. And, as she says later, for someone to bully her.
That’s a bit of a loaded term but it’s basically an arrangement, at least in times like this, where instead of giving instructions or helping others all she has to do is obey the commands that Ryou gives her. And he both treasures this relationship and is scared by it because he views her as being this small and fragile person who just wants to feel everything done to her in times like this. Again, not an unfamiliar arrangement or dynamic, but one that plays out in a pretty intense way here with how Ryou ensures that she gets the release she needs but also the subservience that she grants upon him. He’s not in control, she is. And it just feels all the more intense when you look at it play out here because of the artwork and style, especially with those eyes and expressive style.
In Summary
There isn’t a lot of story to this chapter but it’s one that’s effective in showing an interesting relationship and dynamic that exists within it. It’s unclear how long or how serious it is, or if this is just something that’s occasionally a release that the two participate in, but it’s presented well in showing how both of them engage in it. I really like the artwork style as it’s not “traditional” in the way that a lot of works are and it’s effective in showing us just how much they’re feeling with their expressions. I’m looking forward to exploring more from this creator and what they’ll produce over time and experience.
