Originally appearing in the April 2024 installment of Comic Kaairakuten, this chapter comes from the Eroi-Roeand clocks in at twenty-four pages. They’ve got just over a dozen works on the service over the past year or so and there’s an interesting variety to it. While looking for something new to check out, the main visual for it was interesting and sometimes that’s all you need – plus a quick check of the tags. The visual appeal was a lot of the draw since it felt like it harkened back to an older time with the hair design but sometimes just something like a nicely illustrated coat in a visual can make you want to see more since it shows a sense of style and paying attention to things. Anyone can draw a school uniform and get creative with that, but give me some real-world clothes and you’ve got my interest.
The story here is one that frustrates only in that we never get any names, though for our male lead it makes sense since he’s dead and just a ghost that’s wandering around. The afterlife is boring and he doesn’t know what to do so he mostly just follows cute girls around in the hopes of catching some solo action from time to time. He ends up following this one young woman back to her place in hopes of seeing something there but he gets drawn into the fact that she’s playing with a Ouija-like board doing the whole Kokkuri thing. Since he can do very minimal interactions with the physical plane, such as brushing a leaf and the like, he gets into playing with her a bit by moving the coin on the table when she asks her questions out loud, which slowly leads to something of a discussion between the two of sorts.
What he discovers, however, is that the moment and just the spiritual energy going on allows him to physically interact with her in a way that he hasn’t been able to before. Which means he suddenly realizes he can get quite handsy with her and start taking it all the way while she’s just surprised by the whole thing and at some points trying to bring it to an end because it’s just so surreal. He’s confused by the fact that he can feel everything he’s feeling but the two have a surprisingly strong sequence here as they go at it with each other and where she’s unable to actually touch him herself. That makes it a bit one-sided to a degree but when you mix in the character designs – including his fragmented ghost-form – and the costume design and setting it all comes together into something that feels surprisingly erotic.
In Summary
Don’t Do It Alone has all the creepy things you’d expect when the central premise is a ghost having sexytimes with someone. But there’s also a massive genre of such books and stories out there so your mileage may vary. It’s a well-constructed piece that plays out well while not naming any of the characters which frustrates me to on end since it de-personalizes it. But the visuals are good with great character designs, and a tight setting for it to take place in that adds more to it, and a good sense of what it wants to accomplish. It’s a lot more enjoyable than I expected and has me curious about more of this creator’s work.
