One of the fun things about anime adaptations is that sometimes you can still be surprised about what comes around. As part of the Jump Festa ’23 event back in December 2022, it was revealed that Blue Exorcist is getting a new adaptation. The show had two seasons produced previously back in 2011 and 2017 as well as a feature film. The manga from Kazue Kato began in 2009 and is still ongoing with twenty-eight volumes out so far as serialized in Jump SQ.
The new season is called Blue Exorcist: Shimane Illuminati Saga and it saw a January 6th, 2024 premiere. Aniplex Japan is handling the home video releases and they’ve set a two-set release plan on DVD and Blu-ray where each set is priced at 13,000 yen on DVD and 15,000 yen on Blu-ray.

The new season was directed by Daisuke Yoshida from the scripts overseen by Toshiya Ono. Yuri Oohigashi served both as character designer and chief animation director with Studio VOLN handling the animation production.
The Japanese cast includes Jun Fukuyama as Yukio Okumura, Kana Hanazawa as Shiemi Moriyama, Nobuhiko Okamoto as Rin Okumura, Ayahi Takagaki as Kuro, Eri Kitamura as Izumo Kamiki, Hiroshi Kamiya as Mephisto Pheles, Kazuya Nakai as Ryūji Suguro, Koji Yusa as Renzō Shima, Rina Satou as Shura Kirigakure, Yuuki Kaji as Konekomaru Miwa, Tomokazu Seki as Lewin Light, Nobuyuki Hiyama as Michael Gedōin, and Kouki Uchiyama as Lucifer.
The season features the ending theme song “Gakkyu Nisshi” from Mulasaki Ima while the opening theme song is “Eye’s Sentry” as performed by UVERworld.

Plot Concept: Raised by Father Fujimoto, a famous exorcist, Rin Okumura never knew his real father. One day a fateful argument with Father Fujimoto forces Rin to face a terrible truth—the blood of the demon lord Satan runs in Rin’s veins! It won’t be easy, especially when drawing his father’s sword releases the demonic power within him!
