It's time to get back on this crazy court!

One of my favorite properties of old is the Slam Dunk manga and anime and it looks like we might be able to reconnect with that property going into a new decade. Original creator Takehiki Inoue revealed back in January 2021 that the manga is inspiring a new film. The film saw a December 3rd, 2022 arrival and is going by the name The First Slam Dunk.

Toei is now getting things in order for the home video release in Japan as it saw a February 28th, 2024 release. The release is available in the format options with:

  • 4K UHD + BD Special LE
  • 4K UHD LE
  • 4K UHD Reg
  • BD LE
  • BD Reg
  • DVD LE
  • DVD Reg

Check out the details of the releases here.

With it out, we’re taking a look at the packaging for the limited editions and the regular edition which are largely the same for each format.

With Toei Animation handling the production, the promo reveals that Yasuyuki Ebara as the character designer and animator director while Daiki Nakazawa is on board to handle directing the CG. Takehiko Inoue is directing the film and writing the screenplay for it.

The Japanese cast includes:

  • Shugo Nakamura as Ryota Miyagi
  • Jun Kasama as Hisashi Mitsui
  • Shin’ichirō Kamio as Kaede Rukawa
  • Subaru Kimura as Hanamichi Sakuragi
  • Kenta Miyake as Takenori Akagi

The anime series, based on the manga of the same name, aired between 1993 and 1996 for 101 episodes.

Toei Animation began releasing DVDs with Geneon Entertainment distributing them back in the mid 2000s and then Cinedigm began releasing the series on DVD in North America back in May 2018.

Plot concept: Hanamichi Sakuragi, an entering Shohoku high school freshman, holds a record for being rejected by 50 girls during middle school. His nearly 2 meters height and bright red hair causes most students to write him off as a delinquent.

One day, a girl named Haruko Akagi approaches Hanamichi without any fear. When she asks Hanamichi “do you like basketball?” Hanamichi falls head over heels for the girl of his dreams. Without missing a beat, Hanamichi tells her he loves basketball, and the two head to the gymnasium where Hanamichi learns about the slam dunk. He also learns of Rukawa, one of the country’s top basketball prospects, also a freshman at Shohoku.
