The Weekly TV, Movie, & Games Discussion Post For Week Of Februray 18th, 2024

5 min read
Take look at the shows we've covered, games we're playing, and movies we're watching this week that may not show up elsewhere on the site.

We’re in the first couple of weeks of 2024 and it’s definitely not a place where a lot of people thought we’d be. With the fall TV season being pushed back due to the strikes, a lot of films delayed and being adjusted, and of course just the nature of seasonal broadcasts, it’s been pretty light lately. We’ve had a number of things we’ve checked out but a lot of what I’ve been doing is rewatching older stuff or spending time on holiday programming. Which isn’t actually a lot to talk about when you get down to it. So, to kick off this latest week, we want to highlight some of the things we’re looking forward to this month.

First up, Abdul has checked in with a new game review by looking at the Person 3 Reload Xbox Series X game release. “Overall, Persona 3 Reload while far from perfect, it’s still one of the best remakes released in recent years. It includes tons of new quality-of-life features the original sorely lacked as well as new major changes that still respect the original. While all the extra features seen in other games would’ve been nice the remake still an amazing title on its own that JRPG fans, especially those playing on Xbox Series will love.”

This week saw the release of Oppenheimer on Peacock and it’s been an absolute delight to finally see it. The film is easily a Nolan film with how it all plays out and I love the loose structure of it in moving between the different time periods but providing the right segues to do so. It’s not a movie you can just casually watch because while it does have a narrative it’s not one that’s just plainly straightforward as most movies are. The back and forth is a lot of fun, the range of actors involved is great, and it’s easy to see why it go so much acclaim. It’s hitting on so many things that I knew in the abstract from reading about the people involved decades ago but is brought to life in such an engaging way, even if some elements are likely over dramatized. But the reality of showing just how complicated life was then as it is now is hugely important, especially to those who claim that life decades ago was simpler.

It took me longer to get to and finish than I would have liked, but I wrapped up my viewing of Christmas as Usual. I enjoy romantic comedies and dramas and I enjoy Christmas movies, and I definitely enjoy Norweigan projects. So this felt like it would come together well. But it felt the most Hollywood of anything I’d seen out of the region in a long time with simple tropes, superficial characters, and all the usual garbage elements that would have been solved if people talked like real people for just a minute of time. This felt like something you’d see more a couple of decades ago than most of the similar ones made today, though it’s not too far off the beaten path unfortunately. I had hoped for better but came away disappointed.
