Berserk 1997 HeaderLast summer we talked about how MVM is handling the original 1997 Berserk anime TV series on Blu-ray for UK fans and that they scheduled a new release for it. The show saw a collector’s edition release on May 29th, 2023 where it was an 18+ release once again that will be bilingual. It was priced at £49.99 and be done as a digipak with seven art cards inside.

Now, Discotek Media has announced their pickup of the show for a North American release that will arrive in March 2024. The set will be bilingual and include the extras from the previous release and be done with a gorgeous native HD scan. The extras will include the outtakes that were hidden in the previous release years ago and the screen text is updated as well.

Directed by Naohito Takahashi based on the series composition from Yasuhiro Imagawa, Norihiro Matsubara and Yoshihiko Umakoshi served as the character designers with animation produced by OLM. The series is based on the manga by Kentarou Miura which is published in North America by Dark Horse Comics. The anime was previously released in North America by Media Blasters.

The cast includes Nobutoshi Hayashi as Guts, Toshiyuki Morikawa as Griffith, Yuko Miyamura as Casca, Akiko Yajima as Rickert, Akira Ishida as Judou, Masuo Amada as Pippin and Tomohiro Nishimura as Corkus.

Plot concept: In the castle town of Midland, a new king has come to power through treachery and violence. His demonic agents victimize the citizens unchecked, until the night when a battle weary soldier approaches the city.

Covered in a slew of weapons and countless jagged scars, he calls himself the Black Swordsman. The sword he carries is the size of his grudge against the king, and he hunts the servants of evil with unrelenting fury.
