‘Godzilla x. Kong: The New Empire’ MonsterVerse Sequel Debuts 1st Trailer

2 min read

When it comes to the MonsterVerse batch of films, I’ll admit I’m usually just not representative of what people want from them it seems. While I grew up with them as part of the “creature double feature” films that the local TV stations would show on the weekends during the summer. I was never much of a fan of these even though I liked them conceptually.

With the various attempts to bring it to life over the years, the late 90’s Sony Godzilla left me annoyed and the 2014 attempt worked better but it was too focused on the people while keeping the monsters too far from view.

Yet it was the 70s-set Kong: Skull Island that got me hopeful as it went big and creative in its ideas and execution, making for a lot of fun and just doing something different. That then lead to Godzilla: King of Monsters which delivered everything I wanted from a big-budget Godzilla film in all the right ways. And the idea of throwing it all together with Godzilla vs King Kong definitely gave me a lot more, though it couldn’t beat out King of Monsters for me.

The problem, however, was that King of Monsters underperformed when it came out and did just $470 million worldwide. With a $200 million budget for the newest film that just opened, it was expected that they’d have to give up on the franchise after this because it just wasn’t working what they were doing – in a world where there are a number of $1 billion franchises.

Last year saw Warner Bros. set a theatrical release date for the film on March 15th, 2024 and it was then shifted to an April 12th, 2024 release under the formal name of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Now, a new trailer for it has arrived that shows off some of the things going on in the storyline and puts our two leads together to face a new threat.

Plot Concept: Legends collide as Godzilla and Kong, the two most powerful forces of nature, clash in a spectacular battle for the ages. As a squadron embarks on a perilous mission into fantastic uncharted terrain, unearthing clues to the Titans’ very origins and mankind’s survival, a conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever.
