With Sony Pictures looking to build their Spider-Man universe of films, we learned back in 2019 about the plans for a Madame Web film. At the time, the studio brought in the writers for Morbius with Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless to write it, and then in February 2022 we learned that Sony was definitely moving forward with the project. They’re working from the screenplay that Claire Parker and SJ Clarkson put together with Clarkson directing it.
The project hasn’t had an easy run in terms of sticking to release dates for a host of reasons as it was initially pushed back from a July 2023 release to an October 6th, 2023 debut, With that in mind, the backlog of projects at VFX houses have saw Sony in the fall of 2022 moved it to debut on February 16th, 2024 which has hopes for the visual effects bottleneck to have eased by that point.
While that date still doesn’t feel quite so firm, Sony has brought out their first vignette going behind the scenes on it below and then the first full trailer.
The film has cast Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Emma Roberts, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahir Rahim, Mike Epps, Zosia Mamet, and Adam Scott so far.
Sony had their biggest film ever with Spider-Man: No Way Home and Venom: Let There Be Carnage doing over $500 million worldwide in the fall during some very bad COVID times, the expansion to something within this set with a female lead is huge. And it basically makes it clear we’re more than likely to get a Spider-Gwen film sometime as well.
The character goes back to 1980 when she was created by Denny O’Neil and John Romita Jr. Essentially a precog that’s tied into the greater web, she’s shown up in the comics over the years in different forms as well as the animated series and some of the games. With her being a tie to seeing the greater Spider-Verse, the potential is there to take that animated film and bring those characters to life in live-action form.
Plot Concept: “Meanwhile, in another universe…” In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures…if they can all survive a deadly present.
