We’ve had a few things produced previously in adapting the Seishun Buta Yarō light novel series into anime and now a new anime project is in the works. In September 2022, we learned that they’ll be adapting the 8th and 9th novels in the series with Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out and Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid. What we didn’t know was the form it would take and we learned in December 2022 that it’ll be done as a theatrical feature.

The film saw a June 23rd, 2023 in Japan and we knew previously that the 73-minute it saw its debut at Anime Expo as well. With the second film coming up in a few months, the first film has its home video release in late November and now Aniplex Japan has brought out an eight-minute preview of the original soundtrack for it. Check it out after the spot for the home video release itself.

Soichi Masui is coming back to direct this and based on the series composition by Masahiro Yokotani. Satomi Tamura is returning as well with CloverWorks on board for the production.

The Japanese cast includes:

  • Kaito Ishikawa as Sakuta Azusagawa
  • Asami Seto as Mai Sakurajima
  • Yurika Kubo as Kaede Azusagawa
  • Nao Tōyama as Tome Koga
  • Atsumi Tanezaki as Rio Futaba
  • Maaya Uchida as Nodoka Toyohama
  • Inori Minase as Shōko Makinohara

Plot Concept: Bunny girls do not live in libraries. This is simply common sense. And yet, that’s exactly where Sakuta runs into one in the wild. More bewildering is who the bunny girl is: Mai Sakurajima, an older student who attends the same school and is a well-known actress currently on break from industry work. Wanting to find out more about the mystery surrounding Mai and maybe get a little closer to her in the process, Sakuta launches an investigation to figure out what’s causing this bunny girl to be invisible and unnoticed by everyone around them.
