Fans of the Dark Gathering manga from Kenichi Kondo were definitely excited back in July 2022 as the property was announced for a TV anime adaptation in 2023. The show saw a July 9th, 2023 debut on Tokyo MX and it’s set for a twenty-four-episode run as two cour show.
Now, the Japanese side has dropped the first preview of the ninth episode below ahead of its September 3rd, 2023 premiere.
The series has Hiroshi Ikehata directing it at OLM with Shigeru Murakoshi handling the series composition and Shinya Segawa handling the character designs.
Ikehata commented on the project when announced by noting that this is his first horror anime project and there’s definitely a scary factor to that. He also noted that there aren’t a lot of occult horror properties out there in the anime realm and that this one will definitely be an interesting and scary one.
OLM’s producer Masuda talked about the project as well, stating, “We are working diligently while discussing daily so that we can create a picture that condenses the highlights of the original work and director Ikehata’s commitment.”
The Japanese cast includes:
- Yu Sasahara as Yayoi Hozuki
- Nobunaga Shimazaki as Keitaro Gentoga
- Kana Hanazawa as Eiko Hozuki
- Rina Kawaguchi as Ai Kamiyo
Kana Hanazawa has signed on not just to act in the series as we knew previously but also to perform the ending theme song “Haiiiro” for it.
The manga series from Kenichi Kondo began in 2019 as serialized in Jump SQ magazine with ten volumes out as of August 2022.

Plot Concept: Keitarō Gentōga is a young man who has the ability to be a spirit medium. In junior high school, he got someone else wrapped up in a spirit possession incident, and he has been a shut-in for more than two years. As he reintroduces himself to society as a private tutor, he meets a genius girl named Yayoi Hōzuki. Yayoi is instantly able to tell that Keitarō has skill as a spirit medium, and she invites him to go with her to a haunted location. The two then start their journey capturing evil spirits.
