Originally serialized in Comic Kairakuten BEAST from the September 2023 installment, Summer on the Balcony is a twenty-six-page story from creator Shibaken Gorou, who has fourteen other works on the service. This marked my first experience with this creator as it was something that came up in the new release listing and the premise and artwork made it an appealing thing to try. And it never hurts to get in early on a possible creator that you may enjoy and eagerly await new works from them. As always, the draw is the artwork and if the character designs are something you can connect with but I’m also someone who really prefers some good character material and stories above a certain age and this helps a lot with both.

The story here is one that works out really well in getting us to connect with the characters. Tanabe’s just your average guy living his life when suddenly he’s smacked in the face by a pair of panties that blew over from the neighbor’s balcony. This is when he meets Sasaki, a young woman who has just moved in so she can be closer to her boyfriend. The two here have a comical meet-cute and she basically inserts herself into his life – though she spends most of her time off with her boyfriend elsewhere. There’s a lot of fun in watching these two connect as neighbors since she’s so outgoing and a talkative personality compared to his more relaxed one. He’s not super keen on her pushing her way in like this but she’s got, as she puts it, a very friendly dog kind of vibe that makes her likable.

Where things go off the rails is when she comes by one rainy afternoon and reveals that her boyfriend dumped her and she needs to drink. You can imagine where it goes from here and the way it’s written feels very honest, not an entrapment kind of long con game or anything. The two have a strong connection that’s explored even more and her frisky nature pushes everything into overdrive as she makes her move on him and he can’t resist her on so many levels. It’s absolutely gorgeous artwork throughout it – Tanabe is the rare attractive yet realistic male lead – and the layouts and the actions they take in having sex with each other is just intense. It goes for some natural cliches in a lot of hentai but something about it manages to resonate more because of the storytelling and work put in with the characters.

In Summary
Everything about this worked and was a wonderful discovery for me. There are so many talented hentai creators out there that I thoroughly love when I get introduced to another one, often through luck and with no preconceptions, and come away absolutely delighted and a huge fan. I hope their other works spend the same kind of time on the quality of the setup and character material but even if not, the artwork is just so fantastic that I can likely forgive it just to get more of it. But the combination of both here in what it achieves is why this kind of stuff is what I can’t get enough of and will crave for all my days.
