Not to be confused with the Liar x Liar anime adaptation, we learned in April 2022 that a new project is in the works as the light novel series Liar Liar from Haruki Kuo is getting an anime adaptation. With details coming up over the past several months, we knew the show was set for a summer 2023 debut with a July 8th, 2023 premiere set. Crunchyroll made their pickup for it with a same-day premiere and that it’ll be available to viewers in North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, and CIS.

Now, with the show underway, Crunchyroll is selling the series digitally through Amazon, something we missed earlier. At the moment, the first eight episodes are here where they’re priced at $2.99 each or you can get the whole season for $24.99. They’re in their original Japanese language with English subtitles only.

The show has Satoru Ono and Naoki Matsuura directing it and working from the scripts by Momoko Toyoda. Yumi Nakamura is working on the character designs with GEEKTOYS handling the animation production.

The Japanese cast includes Genta Nakamura as Hiroto Shinohara, Yukina Shutō as Shirayuki Himeji, Wakana Kuramochi as Sarasa Saionji, Rika Tachibana as Noa Akizuki, Yurika Moriyama as Tsumugi Shiina, Houko Kuwashima as Natsume Ichinose, Hibiku Yamamura as Ami Kagaya, Momoko Seto as Fūka Tatara, Mai Mochizuki as Yūki Tsuji, Jun Fukuyama as Seiran Kugasaki, Sora Tokui as Suzuran Kazami, Junya Enoki as Shinji Enomoto, and Saori Ōnishi as Nanase Asamiya.

The series features the opening theme song is “LIES GO ON” from May’n while the ending theme song is “faky merry game” from SMILE PRINCESS.

The light novels by Haruko Kuo began in 2019 with artwork by Kinokonomi and they have twelve volumes out in Japan as of November 2022. A manga adaptation is being handled by Funa Yukina with two volumes out so far.

Plot Concept: The “academy x mind game x romantic comedy” story is set on the “Academy” island where students battle to determine their rankings. Hiroto Shinohara earned the highest ever grade in this school’s entrance exam, the toughest in the entire country. On his first day at the school, he takes down the previous reigning queen, Sarasa Saionji, and becomes the fastest ever student to join the school’s elite “Seven Stars.”

Except, he didn’t really. It’s all a lie. Now to maintain his top ranking, he must fight these school mind games with lies and bluffs. He does whatever it takes with the help of the cute “cheat maid” Shirayuki Himeji (voiced by Miku Itō in a previous promotional video) and even Saionji (who is actually a phony herself).
