One manga series that definitely got some good attention previously as well as an enjoyable anime adaptation was the Barakamon work. The manga originally began in 2009 from Satsuki Yoshino and it wrapped up in 2018 with eighteen volumes. We learned earlier this year that the property is set to return for a limited run in Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine with the April 12th, 2023 issue where it got the cover and a color page.
That installment also revealed that a live-action TV drama is in the works for it as well. It’s an ideal property to adapt into this form so it’s not a surprise and a welcome way to draw attention to both the manga and anime and sell more of it. The show was recently set for a July 2023 premiere and the latest update has added another member of the cast with Kenichi Endo to play Seishu’s father for it.
The previously announced cast includes:
- Yosuke Sugino as Seishu Handa
- Ririsa Miyazaki as Naru Kotoishi
- Keito Tsuna as Hiroshi Kido
- Hana Toyoshima Miwa Yamamura
- Hana Kondō as Tamako Arai
- Kaori Yamaguchi as Tomoko Kido
- Kazuki Iio as Yūjirō Kido
The newly added cast includes:
- Kenichi Endo as Seimei Handa
The live-action series has Keita Kono directing it from the scripts by Kumiko Aso.

Masaki Tachibana directed the series based on the scripts by Pierre Sugiura with character designs by Majiro.
The Japanese cast includes Daisuke Ono, Junichi Suwabe, Yuuki Kaji, Koki Uchiyama, Nozomi Furuki, Rumi Ohkubo, Rina Endou, Seiya Hirata, Megumi Han, Tanuki Sugino and Fumihiko Tachiki. Kinema Citrus handled the animation for the production.
The manga series began in 2009 by Satsuki Yoshino. Yen Press picked up the series for distribution here as well. Satsuki Yoshino has had a few other series running prior to this one with a handful of anthology books and short stories as well as the five-volume release of Princess of Mana.
Plot Concept: After an unfavorable critique drives uptight young calligrapher Sei Handa past his breaking point, his parents decide to ship him off to Japan’s Goto Islands to cool off. But instead of a peaceful paradise, Handa discovers a village full of quirky characters with little regard for personal space. On top of that, Handa’s temporary apartment has already been claimed as home base by the village elder’s granddaughter, Naru, who has a knack for getting into trouble. Will Handa ever be able to redeem his impulsive misdeed? Will he ever be able to write like the masters? Will the village kids ever learn to KNOCK first??
