The Masamune-kun’s Revenge property is something that we haven’t heard about since 2019 when Crunchyroll streamed the OVA for it. The original work itself wrapped up some time ago and we had the 2017 TV anime adaptation that kicked off as the manga was closing in on its finale. We learned on April 1st, 2022 – of all dates – that a second season is coming as Masamune-kun’s Revenge R.

Originally set for the spring 2023 season, the project recently revealed a July 3rd, 2023 premiere for the new season which is now underway. The folks at Crunchyroll are doing some new promotion for it by streaming the opening sequence in a clean form to check out and entice you with. Ayaka Ohashi is performing the song “Please, please!” as the opening for it and now details for the ending theme song have landed. ChouCho is performing “Elemental World” for the project.

The series began back in 2012 with writer Takeoka Hazuki and artist Tiv and it wrapped up with ten volumes worth of material through Comix Rex in 2018.

The TV series was directed by Mirai Minato and based on the series composition from Michiko Yokote. Yokote worked on the scripts with Kento Shimoyama while Yuki Sawairi handled the character designs. The show was animated by Silver Link.

The Japanese cast includes Ayaka Ohashi as Aki Adagaki, Inori Minase as Yoshino Koiwai, Yui Ogura as Kinue Hayase, Asuka Oogame as Chinatsu Hayase, Mariya Ise as Sonoka Kaneko, Kanae Itou as Kikune Kiba and Satomi Sato as Mari Mizuno. The second season includes the addition of Miku Itō as Muriel Besson and Yasuyuki Kase as Frank Besson.

The English dub for the second season has Jad Saxton directing with Morgan Laure and Aaron Campbell assisting from the scripts written by Kieran Flitton. The English cast includes Jessie James Grelle as Masamune, Morgan Lauré as Aki, Monica Rial as Yoshino, Megan Shipman  as Neko, Justin Briner as Kojuurou, Caitlin Glass as Tae, Ryan Reynolds as Gasou, Natalie Rose as Kinue, Skyler Davenport as Chinatsu, Reshel Mae as Muriel Besson, and Derrick Snow as Franck Besson.

For the first season, Alexis Tipton served as the ADR director for the English dub based on the scripts by Emily Neves. The English cast includes Josh Grelle as Masamune Makabe, Morgan Garrett as Aki Adagaki, Monica Rial as Yoshino Koiwai, Justin Briner as Kojuurou Shuri, Skyler Davenport as Chinatsu Hayase, Natalie Hoover as Kinue Hayase and Caitlin Glass as Tae Futaba.

Plot concept: As an overweight child, Makabe Masamune was mercilessly teased and bullied by one particular girl, Adagaki Aki. Determined to one day exact his revenge upon her, Makabe begins a rigorous regimen of self-improvement and personal transformation.

Years later, Masamune re-emerges as a new man. Handsome, popular, with perfect grades and good at sports, Masamune-kun transfers to Aki’s school, and is unrecognizable to her. Now, Masamune-kun is ready to confront the girl who bullied him so many years ago and humiliate her at last. But will revenge be as sweet as he thought?
