One of the movies from this franchise that I still struggle with over the years is the Lupin the 3rd: The Mystery of Mamo feature. The film was originally released in 1978 and has seen release across many formats over the years and different distributors – including a Japanese 4K release (we’ve included that trailer below) from 2019.

The film is now getting some new domestic streaming as the folks at Tubi have added the film in its original Japanese language as well as the English dub for it as part of their ad-supported platform here.

Check out our review of the film.

The film was directed by Soji Yoshikawa and Yasuo Otsuka based on the screenplay written by Yoshikawa along with Atsushi Yamatoya and Jiku Omiya. Yuzo Aoki worked on the character designs for it with TMS producing the animation.

The Japanese cast includes Eiko Masuyama as Fujiko Mine, Gorō Naya as Inspector Zenigata, Kiyoshi Kobayashi as Jigen Daisuke, Kō Nishimura as Mamo/Howard Lockwood, Makio Inoue as Goemon Ishikawa XIII, and Yasuo Yamada as Arsene Lupin III.

Plot concept: The world’s most wanted master thief, Lupin the Third is dead! Despite a coroner’s report, Inspector Zenigata is skeptical and discovers that Lupin is actually alive and well and stealing! But who had set up Lupin’s death and why? Meanwhile, Fujiko is lured by the promise of eternal youth and beauty by the mad scientist known as Mamo. Pursuing Fujiko leads Lupin and his gang to Mamo’s hideaway, where they discover the madman’s dark secret and a fiendish scheme that threatens the entire planet! Now, it’s up to Lupin to stop the insane Mamo – before he can complete his 10,000-year-old plans of world domination.
