Originally serialized in Comic Bavel from the May 2023 installment, Snipe You! is a twenty-page story from creator Namiki Nazu, who has just three other works on the service. This marked my second experience with this creator as it was something that came up in the new release listing and the premise and artwork made it an appealing thing to try. And it never hurts to get in early on a possible creator that you may enjoy and eagerly await new works from them. Their previous work with Fantasy Diary was a decent bit of fun but still shows a lot of the staples of basic storytelling. This one gets a bit more in there but still mostly works because of the strength of the artwork and the mood generated.

The premise introduces us to a couple of college students with Kyousuke and Azumi. They were out drinking with friends and missed the last train and ended up in a love hotel together. The two have known each other for a bit and she’s taken to teasing him a lot, which is frustrating to him because he’s definitely into her. So he’s not keen on being in a love hotel with her, especially when she hops on the bed and teases him more, pressing against him and being silly. He’s intent on doing the right thing because he wants to actually date her proper and that has him going to spend the night on the couch. But that just reinforces her attempts to win him over as he turns around to see her lifting up her shirt and showing him what he’s missing.

The basics are pretty simple in that she’s wanted him for some time as well but attempts to be forward and to do it in a teasing way have led to this. He’s trying to be respectful but she’s just opening his pants and grinding on him, which at least finally gets the two of them to admit things – especially when she discovers that her bravado has been hiding that she’s a virgin herself, something she teased him about a lot. Suffice to say, we get two first-timers going at it here so there isn’t a lot to it as it’s pretty vanilla, but the enjoyment is in watching two people who have had feelings for each other express them pretty clearly and in a kind of hungry way that comes from such a first-time encounter. It also doesn’t hurt that Nazu’s artwork is pretty good and their design for Azumi alone makes it worthwhile.

In Summary
This chapter works well in managing both the love hotel angle of things as well as the first-timers element. And it plays to the whole friends-to-lovers thing as well. It’s pretty standard in the script and plot of it all, but it’s executed well and the artwork is really good. I’m excited to see where they go in the future with the artwork to be sure but if they’re able to up their game just a bit more with the story it’s going to be quite good. Extra points for this being a college-age story as that helps a lot as well in making it more interesting than the usual high school stuff.
