We had a really good run with the anime adaptation of The Ancient Magus’ Bride previously and honestly, I don’t think most people expected more to come. Back in March 2021, the official site has revealed that the manga was getting more anime being produced which ended up being three OADs released through 2021 and 2022. We learned in September 2022 that the staff and cast from those OAD episodes are coming back for a second season of the TV series proper which saw an April 6th, 2023 debut.
The anime is going to adapt the Gakuin arc of the manga and we now have our first look at the fourth episode that’s arriving on April 27th, 2023.
The new adaptation has original creator Kore Yamazaki writing it with Kazuaki Terasaw directing it at Studio Kafka. This is apparently a studio put together specifically for this project. Yamazaki’s story is being adapted by Aya Takaha – who worked on the previous project – along with Yoko Yonaiyama. Hirotaka Kato returns as the character designer.
The Japanese cast for this includes Hiromi Igarashi as Gabriel and Aoi Ichikawa. The new cast additions include Minami Tsuda as Lucy, Maki Kawase as Philomela, Seiichiro Yamashita as Rian, Daiki Kobayashi as Zoe, Reina Ueda as Veronica, and Kotaro Nishiyama as Isaac.
The series features the opening theme song ‘Dear” as performed by JUNNA while this one previews the ending theme song “Mubanso” by edda.
Known as Mahou Tsukai no Yome in its original Japanese form, Seven Seas Entertainment acquired The Ancient Magus Bride manga back in 2014 for release. The manga series comes from Kore Yamazaki, their third professionally published work, and the first North American volume landed in May 2015. The series is currently being serialized in Monthly Comic Garden.
Plot concept: Hatori Chise is only 16, but she has lost far more than most. With neither family nor hope, it seems all doors are closed to her. But, a chance encounter began to turn the rusted wheels of fate. In her darkest hour, a mysterious magus appears before Chitose, offering a chance she couldn’t turn down. This magus who seems closer to demon than human, will he bring her the light she desperately seeks, or drown her in ever deeper shadows?
