The anime TV series that kept me into anime back in the early 1990s made its way to Blu-ray box set form in Japan a few years ago with Urusei Yatsura. That series ran for 218 episodes, saw half a dozen movies, and a bunch of OVAs over its run, and has been a regular go-to for me in bringing a smile to my face over the years.

This new adaptation is set to run for four cour with a 46-episode run planned in full where there will be a two-cour consecutive run that will make up the first season of this adaptation. The series saw an October 13th, 2022 premiere with streaming through HIDIVE and bilibili. The eighth episode is coming up on December 1st, 2022 and the first teaser for it has arrived.

Hideya Takahashi will be directing it with Yasuhiro Kimura based on the series scripts overseen by Yuuko Kakihara. Naoyuki Asano is handling the character designs with David Production handling the animation itself.

The Japanese cast includes Hiroshi Kamiya as Ataru Moroboshi, Sumire Uesaka as Lum, Maaya Uchida as Shinobu Miyake, Mamoru Miyano as Shutaro Mendo, Wataru Takagi as Cherry, Miyuki Sawashiro as Sakura, Kana Hanazawa as Ran, Katsuytuki Konishi as Rei, Saori Hayami as Oyuki, Shizuka Ishigami as Benten, Nana Mizuki as Princess Kuruma, Kenta Miyake as Onsen Mark, Takahiro Sakurai as Tsubame Ozuno, Marina Inoue as Ryoko Mendo, and Kotatsu Neko. Additional cast includes Toshio Furukawa as Ataru’s dad, Keiko Toda as Ataru’s mom, Rikiya Koyama as Lum’s dad, and Fumi Hirano as Lum’s mom.

Property concept: When an alien race known as the Oni invade Earth, the chronically unlucky and unapologetically lecherous Ataru Moroboshi is selected as humanity’s representative in a duel for the fate of the planet! His opponent is Lum, the Oni’s very pretty princess, and it’s only thanks to Ataru’s unscrupulous behavior that he’s able to scrape out a win in a treacherous game of tag against her. Ataru thinks he’s had his lucky break at last, but when Lum takes a shine to him off the battlefield, the conflict follows him home as Lum invades not only planet Earth, but also the womanizing Ataru’s love life!
