We learned last summer through the Good! Afternoon magazine that the manga series My Master Has No Tail is getting an anime adaptation. With the show making a formal September 30th, 2022 debut, Sentai Filmworks picked up the series for distribution and eventual home video release. In Japan, Pony Canyon is handling the release and they’ve opted for a complete Blu-ray box set-only plan. The set is a quick release overall with it planned for a January 18th, 2023 debut for its thirteen-episode run where it’ll be priced at 27,000 yen.
It’ll come with a booklet and event ticket priority application as these often do while on-disc extras include some after-talk recordings, the clean theme songs, and the usual promos and commercials.
With it obviously still a bit away, Pony Canyon is doing some new promotion for the show in general and making nods to the set as they’re highlighting the Daikokutei Bunk version of the opening theme song “Genai Yūgi” that will be included.
Hideyo Yamamoto is set to direct it at Liden Films with plans for a 2022 debut. Yamamoto has been a series director on a few projects including Cells at Work! Code Black and Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka as well as most of the Strike the Blood OVA and TV projects.
The series will star M.A.O as Mameda, Hibiku Yamamura as Bunko, Lynn as Shirara Tsubaki, Takuya Eguchi as Tsubaki Byakudanji, Ayumu Murase as Sakujiro, Natsuki Aikawa as Omatsu, Ikumi Hasegawa as Koito, Yuichiro Umehara as Rakuda. Additional cast includes Ayana Taketatsu as Enishi Kirino, Akira Ishida as Utaroku Ebisuya, and Hibiku Yamamura as Buncho Daikokutei.
GARNiDELiA is on board to handle the opening theme song “Genai Yūgi” while Hinano will perform the ending theme song “Virginia.”
The original manga series from TNSK began in 2019 in Good! Afternoon magazine and has six volumes out as of initial announcement.

Plot Concept: Throughout time, supernatural, shapeshifting tanuki loved playing tricks on humankind. One plucky tanuki, Mameda, is no different. But there’s one big problem. She wasn’t born in the days of yore — she was born in modern, more cynical times! How can she fulfill her mischievous tanuki destiny when supernatural hijinks are a thing of the past? She finds an angle when she meets Bunko, a master of the Japanese art of rakugo, which uses storytelling to beguile its audience. Mameda is determined to use rakugo to cast a spell on humanity, but first this tanuki trickster must convince the no-nonsense Bunko to take her on as an apprentice.
