While Discotek Media has brought out the 2001 anime series Cyborg 009: The Cyborg Soldier as an SDBD release as no Blu-ray is available in Japan, the folks at Avex Pictures previously brought out that kind of edition there as well. The 51-episode set was produced as a two-disc venture that was priced at 27,000 yen when it arrived on March 20th, 2020.
With it being a couple of years, Avex Pictures is back with it and knocking off some of the prices as it saw an August 26th, 2022 debut priced at 18,000 yen. It took a bit but there are finally a few versions of the cover available online that you can now see below.
It’s being remastered from the original work at a “high rate SD” format as they promote it.
The show was a more modern attempt at bringing Osamu Tezuka’s manga to life after the original series in the 1960’s.
The show has some pretty twisty paths to being licensed that are worth checking out here.
Plot Concept: Skull, the evil leader of the terrorist organization known as Black Ghost, has nine powerful cyborgs under his control. But Dr. Isaac Gilmore, the Black Ghosts cybernetics scientist, decides to go rogue, helping the cyborgs turn against Skull and his evil organization.
Black Ghost wishes to start the next major world war by flooding the market with weapons of mass destruction. It seems the nine brave cyborgs have their work cut out for them, as Black Ghost is determined to bring those nine cyborgs down.
