‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ Original Anime Series Sets Premiere

2 min read
Studio Trigger signs onto a big project.

We learned all the way back in the summer of 2020 that the Cyberpunk 2077 world is expanding as a ten-episode original anime series being produced with Netflix that will arrive in 2022.

We started to get a few more details earlier this summer and now Netflix has listed a September 13th, 2022 premiere date for the show for those in North America.

The series has some strong talent behind it with Hiroyuki Imaishi (Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill, Promare) set to direct it along with assistant director Masahiko Otsuka (Gurren Lagann, Promare), and creative director Hiromi Wakabayashi (Kill la Kill). It brings on board character designers Yoh Yoshinari (Little Witch Academia, BNA: Brand New Animal) and Yuto Kaneko (Little Witch Academia) with it all working from the adapted screenplay by Yoshiki Usa (SSSS.GRIDMAN, Promare) and Masahiko Otsuka (Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill, Promare). The original score will be composed by Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill series).

The opening theme song is “This Fffire” by Franz Ferdinand.

Plot Concept: The story is about a street kid trying to survive in a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future. Having everything to lose, he chooses to stay alive by becoming an edgerunner—a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.
