Originally serialized in Comic X-Eros #97 from the August 2022 installment, First Date is a twenty-page story from creator Sanjuurou, who has just about twenty other works on the service. This marked my latest experience with this particular creator as I was looking through new releases looking for something, anything, that didn’t involve high school characters for a bit in. After really enjoying their most recent work with Impression, I was up for another piece even if it does lean into both the love hotel and mating press tags again as well as the housewife piece. It’s got all the familiar setup pieces and a good creator can definitely work well with them.

The premise for this is one that takes place during the pandemic so we get face masks worn by most everyone. We’re introduced to twenty-year-old Kurayoshi who has a real crush on the woman working at the store he goes to named Kotoura. He finally gets the courage to ask her out and gives her his number, which he’s shocked that she ends up calling and setting up a date for. Since she’s wearing a wedding ring, he never expected anything but was compelled to chance as others have told him reasons why women wear rings that aren’t married. I think all the evidence is there that she is married but goes through with it as a crush of her own or whatever her situation is, which isn’t revealed. But when you schedule a date during the week and have to be home by a certain time – and you skip a planned workday – the signs are all there.

The pair have a pretty good time out and about but when they walk by a love hotel later in the evening and she makes it clear what she wants and has hoped for. It’s cute to see him flustered by it and how they stumble into the situation and room. It’s a sequence that takes up the rest of the chapter and is something that’s beautifully illustrated, no doubt, and a lot of fun in general with what it does as the two have a good time together. While Kotoura starts off with a nice outfit it’s not something that turns into anything else and it’s pretty standard kind of stuff that unfolds from there. It’s clear that Kurayoshi is inexperienced but not without some experience so he’s able to hold his own and there’s a playful aspect at the end about whether she’s really single or not, but the dynamic between the two is solid for a pretty good vanilla interaction.

In Summary
First Date delivers some cute material in general and I really like the way they play with the mask side of it. When they’re on the date portion and first meet, she gets to do a reveal of what she looks like without it and that’s definitely part of the whole mystery/allure thing that a lot of folks have with clothes themselves. It’s done in a really cute way that’s playful and sets the tone for the rest of the date, culminating in a really good time had by both of them. The tags are pretty clear as to what this is all about and it works well with them as it’s exactly the right kind of everyone-is-happy kind of first date thing. I can see there being more and it’d be fun to see more of who Kotoura is, but this isn’t a chapter that leaves you really craving more even as enjoyable as it is.
