The Review
Content (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
Our heroes take the first step toward their final fight but getting to Innocent Zero’s castle is no small feat. The fortress is surrounded by dragons – fighting those ancient creatures may very well claim their lives before they’ve even made it to their destination. Nevertheless, they plunge into battle, ready to put their lives on the line. One casual flight later and they arrive at the stronghold. The dragons didn’t even bat an eye… it seems they were there for aesthetic purposes more than anything.

But the true barrier to entry would be a literal barrier blocking their path. The only one with an ability to traverse the obstacle is Finn Ames. Finn comes across a pair of intimidating guards obstructing his path, to which he promptly surrenders and retreats. Finn’s lack of confidence gets the best of him as he hangs his head in defeat. Even with the world’s impending doom, what could a weak wizard like Finn hope to accomplish? But when Finn finds a bag of candy in his pocket, memories come flooding into his mind. He promised Mash they would graduate together and return to the market where Finn and his friends hung out for the first time. Mustering up all his courage, Finn charges headfirst toward the formidable gate guardians.

Finn is immediately outclassed – the immeasurable speed of the guards makes it impossible for Finn to even land an attack, let alone cast a spell. Still, Finn eggs them, and in a moment of ingenuity, he uses their speed against them. Using his changeas spell, he swaps places at the last second, causing the guards to collide and knock each other out. He may be outnumbered and outmatched, but Finn’s perseverance to defy impossible odds is a sign that he’s an incredible mage in the making, just like his buddy Mash. And in the same vein, Finn strikes a victory pose, proclaiming to overcome any obstacle with his fist.

In Summary:
“Finn Ames and the Twin Gate Guards” gives us a good glimpse into Finn’s growth as a mage. Without even using the new abilities he learned from Kaldo, he’s proven his potential to overcome his role as a sideline spectator. Chapter 114 coalesces all of Mashle’s best qualities, resulting in a great character-focused entry that will surely continue to payoff as we see what the rest of the squad have gained from their training.
