Everything old is new again and Netflix knows nostalgia can drive interest while also capturing new fans. We learned in March 2019 that the manga series Spriggan is getting a new anime adaptation for Netflix with plans for a worldwide debut. The series was previously set for a 2021 premiere on the streaming service but got bumped to 2022 because of the cascading effects of the pandemic.

With it recently seeing a June 18th, 2022 debut, the folks at Netflix have dropped a three-minute multilingual clip that features eight languages and thirteen subtitle options. Here, Prof. Rie Yamabishi can’t catch a break! Where’s Yu Ominae when you need him?

The series is set as a six-episode piece where they’re roughly 45-minutes each – reminding me of the old OVA days!.

Hiroshi Kobayashi is directing the series based on the composition put together by Hiroshi Seko who is also working on the scripts. Shuhei Handa is on board with the character designs and serving as the chief animation director with David Production handling the animation production.

The Japanese cast includes:

  • Chiaki Kobayashi as Yū Ominae
  • Yōhei Azakami as Jean Jacquemonde
  • Kenji Hamada as Chief Yamamoto
  • Mariya Ise as Yoshino Somei
  • Ken Narita as Kōichi Moroha
  • Ayumu Murase as Colonel McDougal
  • Yoshimasa Hosoya as Iwao Akatsuki
  • Akio Ohtsuka as Captain Steve Foster

Taisei Iwasaki is on board for the opening song with “Seeking the Truth feat. YAHZARAH.”

The manga comes from creators Hiroshi Takashige and Ryouji Minagawa which began in 1989 and ran for eleven volumes before finishing up in 1998. Three volumes were released by Viz Media. An anime feature film was produced in 1998 as well which ADV Films licensed and released.

Plot Concept: A great civilization once existed on this Earth. Possessing knowledge and scientific prowess far exceeding that of modern man, the relics of this ancient civilization remain hidden across this world even now.

As high-speed communication networks cover the globe and the peering eyes of satellites are able to expose all secrets, the armies of great nations clash as they seek to uncover and research these artifacts, which possess an unfathomable “power.”

A member of this ancient civilization carved a message into a plate: “Protect our relics from evil-doers.” Taking this message to heart, one organization aims to seal away this ancient civilization for good.

The elite secret agents of this organization are known as…Spriggans.
