"Gundam rises, once more."

The folks at Sunrise announced back in September 2021 that they were looking to expand on another area of the past with a story based on the original 15th episode of the original series with Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island. This episode is one that has been denied to English-language fans as the episode has been kept from home video releases for years, largely, as the tale goes, because original creator Tomino never cared for how the whole thing turned out and didn’t want it included.

Planned for a June 3rd, 2022 premiere in Japan, we’ve had a growing slate of cast members announced over the last few months. The latest, however, is a dialogue-oriented clip that has landed as it shows dialogue on the two sides. Check it out below.

The Japanese cast includes Shunsuke Takeuchi as Cucuruz Doan, Toru Furuya as Amuro Ray, Ken Narita as Bright Noa, Satomi Arai as Mirai Yashima, Megumi Han as Sayla Mass, Toshio Furukawa as Kai Shiden, Hideki Nakanishi as Hayato Kobayashi, Misato Fukuen as Fraw Bow, Tomofumi Ikezoe as Sleggar Law, Yuu Hayashi as Danan Rashica, Doan, Shizuka Itou as Selma Levens, Atsushi Miyauchi as Egba Atler, Yōji Ueda as Wald Ren, Koji Yusa as Yun Sanho, Katsuyuki Konishi, Hiroshi Shirokuma as Elran, Hiroshi Naka as Johann Ibrahim Revil, Naomi Kusumi as Gopp, Takumi Yamazaki as M’Quve, Makoto Yasumura as Uragang, Yūma Uchida as Marcos, and Fū Hirahara as Cara.

This new feature film retelling of the story is based on the manga from Junji Ono that ran for five volumes starting back in 2016. The film has Yoshikazu Yasuhiko on board to direct it as well as working on the character designs for it. Yasuhiko has spent a lot of time working on various Gundam: Origin projects over the years with his manga as well, of which Ono’s story is a spinoff from.

Plot Concept: The story is set after the Federation defense of Jaburo, with the Federation planning to renew offensives on Zeon’s invasion headquarters in Odessa. Amuro and the White Base head to Belfast to resupply, but the White Base receives new orders: to head to the “Island of No Return” to search and destroy any Zeon stragglers. Amuro set out on the island in search of Zeon spies, but find a group of children and a Zaku mobile suit on the supposedly uninhabited island. With the Gundam left behind, Amuro encounters a man who calls himself Cucuruz Doan. After uncovering the secret of the island, Amuro attempts to make his way back to the Gundam to escape.
