Originally serialized in Comic Kairakuten BEAST from the April 2022 installment, Spring-Tinted Bookshelf is a twenty-two-page story from creator Nekomata Naomi, who over two dozen or so other works on the service. I’ve been hit or miss with their material because of the tags but this one had all the right ones, especially since I was in the mood for something that looked to have a good bit of fun about it. The simple thing, however, is that the artwork is great as I really like their designs in general, especially with clothing and settings, as that helps to really make it feel far more immersive and real in a way than so much of the very bland and basic hentai I grew up on.

With this story we get two nameless characters which is always frustrating. Here, it’s graduation time and our young man is now done with his school responsibilities, which included three years on the library committee. And he reveals to his now former teacher that she was the reason he was on there as he’s wanted her from day one but refrained because of obvious reasons. Now that he’s graduated and old enough, he’s making his play but she’s not interested in that and doesn’t seem to see him in that way. She can’t quite outright reject him however and when he talks about how he wondered what she was like as a student, she manages to tell him to come back in a few weeks during break and she’ll deal with him then. The intent is to reject him in a nice way, which in her mind is wearing her school uniform to at least give him that fantasy in brief.

Of course, he ends up coming into the storage room to find her as she’s changing into it and he basically sees her as really making his dream come true. She does decline to a degree initially as he admires her but she says no more clearly when he gets handsy, which is frustrating because he’s clearly not listening. And she’s basically pressured into more as it progresses, making for an awkward piece that could have been a lot more interesting even while problematic. She does keep the uniform on to varying degrees as it progresses as he gets handsier and handsier, and she feels bad for his frustration along the way as well which has her giving in even more. But it’s clearly not a situation she wanted and it doesn’t paint him in a good light at all. You can see the rough edge of a more interesting pairing here but the whole soft denial thing is its own genre, one that doesn’t work that well for me unless it’s clearly being played at with the couple in question.

In Summary
I’ve liked a number of things that Nekomata Naomi has done but this one was definitely weaker when it comes to the story. And, frankly, the adult elements are pretty weak as well. The actual artwork is great as I love the professor’s design and how she carries herself for much of it, and squeezing into her old school uniform badly, but the actual hentai elements just don’t work that well and made worse because of the story design. I can see where they were going and perhaps something is lost in translation as well, but it just fell flat for me as a work in general outside of the art itself.
