With Sony Pictures looking to build their Spider-Man universe of films, we learned back in 2019 the plans for a Madame Web film. At the time, the studio has brought in the writers for Morbius with Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless to write it. We learned in early February 2022 that Sony is definitely moving forward with the project and is in talks with Dakota Johnson to take on the role. They’re working from the screenplay that Sazama and Sharpless put together and S.J. Clarkson is attached to direct the film.
Now, some additional casting has been revealed with Syndey Sweeney of white Lotus and Euphoria will be joining the project opposite Dakota Johnson. Naturally, no indication of who she will play in the project but with Sony always looking at spin-off potential, that may be worth remembering. She’d certainly make for a great Black Cat.
With Sony having their biggest film ever with Spider-Man: No Way Home and Venom: Let There Be Carnage doing over $500 million worldwide in the fall during some very bad COVID times, the expansion to something within this set with a female lead is huge. And it basically makes it clear we’re more than likely to get a Spider-Gwen film sometime as well.
The character goes back to 1980 when she was created by Denny O’Neil and John Romita Jr. Essentially a precog that’s tied into the greater web, she’s shown up in the comics over the years in different forms as well as the animated series and some of the games. With her being a tie to seeing the greater Spider-Verse, the potential is there to take that animated film and bring those characters to life in live-action form.
