Originally serialized in Comic Kairakuten BEAST from the March 2022 installment, Lavender Maiden is a twenty-six-page story from creator Hinasaki Yo, who has almost seventy other works on the service. I had gotten into them through some of their darker works but they’ve done a couple of more amusing chapters since then and I’ve enjoyed the variety to their stories in general, with this one playing a bit more serious overall. While I’ve read several of their stories, I haven’t read one this long which is why I was curious to see how they’d handle it. Generally, their stories have a good balance between story and character material and the hentai side of it, but things work differently with something of this length.

The premise behind this is certainly interesting as we’re introduced to Keisuke, a young man working in the garment business where they provide fabrics for the local theater group and school. Business has been tough for both of those industries the last few years and we see how Keisuke has found himself wrapped up in a situation where the talented young leader of the theater, Kiyoka, uses him as a dog of sorts to pleasure her. It’s often for things that allow her dominance over him and he’s clearly a masochist at times with what he allows her to do to him. The story doesn’t go too deep into the fetishes but it showcases well how he is in the present and how things came together in the beginning where she took advantage of the situation.

Keisuke knows that being involved with someone so beautiful can’t last long and when he overhears that she’s engaged, it sets him to the mindset of making sure that the next time she calls on him, which would be the last, it will be the best experience. And while it does start off with the usual dominance from her, pulling away the ornate clothes, it’s something that becomes more intense as he remembers more and more that this will be the last time. It’s clear he’s in love but that’s now translating into not only the best experience for him but for her as well. She’s surprised by how he’s acting and the way there’s such passion and intensity to it that it really reshapes how she views him, especially after he confesses to her in the middle of it and just drives her to new ends. It’s really well done with an amusing bit of self-defeat of sorts in how he cuts her off completely afterward, thinking he’s being a proper man by not causing trouble with her engagement.

In Summary
This was a really fun story in its design and execution, though it’s frustrating that we only learn Keisuke’s name toward the end of it. That’s part of the dominance that Kiyoka is employing so it works and makes sense but from a storytelling perspective it frustrates a bit. Beyond that, Hinasaki Yo delivers some great designs throughout for the outfits, Kiyoka is just gorgeous as each new layer is revealed, and the intimacy between them hits some really sweet spots that deliver the goods. It’s a great chapter that has me wanting to go back to more of their work to check out.
